It's easy to get anxious or disillusioned with the current state of our planet (and ocean). But this week we have something to smile about. 💙 🧪

The @oceancensus.bsky.social has discovered over 800 new marine species. This is a great reminder of why we need to preserve our marine ecosystems.

Today, they inaugurated The Great Bubble Barrier in Vila do Conde, Portugal. It’s 235 meters long, the largest ever installed. Its purpose is to block, capture, and collect plastic that unfortunately floats downstream and ends up in the sea and on the nearby beaches. Congrats to all involved!

How does a Bubble Barrier work? ⚙️

We create a bubble curtain by pumping air through a perforated tube, which creates an upward current directing plastic to the surface. By placing it diagonally across the river, the flow of the water will push the plastic to the side and into the catchment system.

Did you know that over 90% of plastic is never #recycled?

🧃 Of 350 million tonnes produced yearly, only 9% gets recycled.

Many plastic items end up in rivers, like this bottle cap. Recycling alone will never be the ultimate solution. We need to focus on prevention, reduction and cleanup.
