The DAWN Method

The DAWN Method provides training in DAWN, strength-based dementia care for families & professionals. It was created by Judy Cornish, author of Dementia With Dignity and The Dementia Handbook.
Dementia does not take away our need for sensory and social stimulation; it simply takes away our ability to understand and interpret it.

Irritability, anger, and fear are not symptoms of #dementia. They are simply emotions anyone might experience when embarrassed or put on the spot by demands to do what they can no longer do. The symptoms of dementia are cognitive losses, not behaviors.

#Dementia care partners provide care, not treatment. Caring means looking for and meeting someone's emotional needs and enriching their life. Dementia means losing cognitive skills and becoming less able. Be kind. Bring me fun, beauty and companionship.

#Dementia takes away our memories, but only if our companions don't use their own memory skills and share reshare our memories with us. Become my memorykeeper: memorize my favorite stories in my own words and then share them with me when I've forgotten.

People experiencing #dementia can’t help repeating themselves. Instead of feeling frustrated when your loved one launches into that same old tale, set up the conversation to take them there on purpose. Memorize their stories to share with them later once they've forgotten.

#DementiaCare means supporting someone who's losing the ability to perceive risk. We must juggle autonomy and safety—providing just enough care that they don't refuse help and put themselves in danger. Acceptance of care lies in dignity and autonomy. Success requires respect.

Saying "you should/must/need to, because" doesn't help in #dementia care because we lose the thinking skills needed to make sense of those statements. Rather than explain, distract me or partner with me in doing something fun, or turn my attention elsewhere.

An empowering technique for care partners is to be thoughtful about what is visible and what is not visible in the home. Clutter, or too many options, inhibits choice. Clear off surfaces and put out just the items you want used or selected. Enable me!

It is easier for someone with #dementia to choose between two options or to choose whether to do something or not. Ask, “Would you like a cookie or piece of pie?” rather than “What do you want for dessert?” Presenting options is a way we can empower someone with dementia.

When #dementia takes away memory and rational thought functions, it becomes difficult to make decisions. If we ask our loved ones open-ended questions, we are requiring that they use recall and analysis to find an answer, something they cannot do. Give them options instead.
