Originally from California, Vancouver's Leonard Schein moved to Canada in 1972 for graduate school and operated several movie theatres, founded the Vancouver Film Festival in 1981, and led and programmed major film festivals in Montreal and Toronto.

After the terror attack in Australia, record numbers of Canadians showed up to public Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremonies across the country. Many proudly displayed hanukkiyot in their windows.
