The planet. The complex fertile cradle of new life. They are so rare, those tiny jewels of rock, soil, atmosphere and water where compatible life can grow and rise to sentience.

Now that you know and have seen this with your long perspective, what would you do to protect what you find so valuable?

If you *know* that there *is* an afterwards once the race you're helping gets tired and dwindles to retirement, what then?
There will be another intelligent race rising on the world. There are always, with careful stewardship, several races rising at once.
What's important now? The common factor?

So, watching civilizations grow up. The first thing you learn is that they're mayflies. Not unimportant by *any* means, they matter. If you've been married for longer than they've had written language, tho? That's an interesting perspective.
You also get to see what comes before, and after them too.

One of the things I started thinking about when I was planning the Ceph books is if you have a truly long life perspective, what do you value?
100 years? 10,000 years? What has value after 1,000,000 years, or more?
What I decided on was the variety of life. You could help civilizations grow up.

What's an Ansible?

In the Ceph universe an Ansible is an android Ceph. A hive-mind entangled quantum computer. What one of them knows, they all do, communicating instantly amongst themselves and the biological Ceph across the Galaxy.

How do the world-ships get around? Three ways :-)

Inertialess thrusters in the arms, trillions of them.
Fusion torches run off a Bussard ramjet.
Gravity waves. What? Oh, yes!

Let's talk World-Ships!
The Ceph live as long as they want to, and the Ansibles are immortal. They're not in a hurry.

Traveling sublight in ships the size of Mars, with a thousand deck-shells, each with a variety of biosphere gives you a *lot* of living room, far more than a planet would.

The Dark Forest Theory attempts to explain why we haven't heard from anyone else yet.

In the Ceph universe I solve this, in a good way :-) The Ceph don't use radio or EM radiation to communicate, but use their companions, the Ansibles.

The Ceph are a Galactic, Kardashev level 4 race. Our cephalopods are their descendants, the devolved remnants of their first Colony.
Reborn starts with the Uplift of two females, an Octopus and a Humboldt squid back to sentience.

Here's Bright's knife! My Artist James Bennett and I are martial arts teachers. We designed a knife an octo could make and use with what she had at... hand... It's a paua shell cut like a karambit. Her arm goes down the 1st hole, up through the 2nd along the main rib. Edge and point always forward!
