Living a champagne life on a rain water budget. Self sufficiency, zero waste and making a life in a slow and traditional way.
While the others scoff into fakeaway leftovers this week my dinner is my own homemade Roasted Tomato and Basil Soup which I waterbathed from the freezer. Tonight I’ve added a little bit of kefir to give it a little something something and voila…. Healthy Cream of Tomato soup.

Today is my last day of solid food for around 4 months.

We have a lot of veg on the way out and the best way I can think of to use it up so these guys have food for the next couple of days and I don’t have to cook is to throw together some more Asian inspired meals.

Our garden needs help but Tanny is starting to get on top of it.

Last nights stir fry is tonight’s noodle dish.

It doesn’t have to take a lot to change things up and make it more interesting.

A couple of days ago I bought food that really did disappoint it cost nearly £30 for food for one person.

On the days I can’t work I make sure to watch others do theirs so I can be the absentee supervisor and project manager and give them instructions from the couch. 😂

Have an awesome one and go be as productive as you can be even if it’s from a distance xox

7 jars of Black Cherry Jam.

The cherries £1 a bowl at Kirkgate Market, sugar £1, gas 20p

To buy cherry jam is an average of around £2 a jar.

So for the price of 1 jar of the good, good stuff we got a years worth. I’m good with that.

We saved around £15 … don’t tell me buying it is cheaper.

I have my work cut out for me today. Fruit from Kirkgate Market cost a tenner for all this lot.

Cherries, Plums, Early Season English Strawberries and Flat Peaches. Let’s see how much we can save by making items for the pantry to help carry us through the year rather than buying them.

18 Litres of Beef Bone Broth later ready for waterbathing tomorrow.

It’s a tough life but someone’s gotta do it 🤣

The bones are off to a couple of very appreciative doggos and the veg will be dug into the beds in the greenhouse over the weekend.

At the moment I’m one handed due to a fibromyalgia flare in my right hand. I still have to feed the family though. Which means finding a way.

Tanny and I are going to look like potato cakes by the end of this week. We are on a mission though to find the perfect mix so I can make a huge batch and freeze them.

Shortbread is one of the easier and most versatile biscuits you can possibly learn. It makes a great alternative to pastry for tarts and pies, it can be made into all kinds of shapes and sizes and it can be combined with just about any flavour combination you can come up with.

We’ve started buying cream from Tanny’s work as we can get a 2 Litre of whipping cream for around £6.90 which is not affiliated to Arla or part of the Bovaer trials.

Most other dairies who are NOT part of the trials either generally sell it for £8 for 2 litres which is still a really good price.

In less than 10 minutes this morning I have saved myself £9.56 approximately on speciality sugars.

Soft light brown sugar is £1.70 per kilo
Soft Dark Brown Sugar is £1.70 per kilo
Molasses Sugar is £2.30 per 500g

I made Tanny his Char Sui pork today … turns out this pork was gammon lol. Not a worry the saltiness kinda balanced the sweet and it was still lush. Best bit was the meat a#was a gift from a friend so all I had to do was make the sauce and cook it :)

Next years pickled eggs done YAY!!! These are way better than the ones at the chip shop and so very simple.

If we had to buy the pickled eggs at the supermarket you’re looking at £3.90 a jar for good ones which these are or £2.60 for basic ones.

It’s utterly freezing this morning and snow is in the air even if it isn’t falling over us. We still are not putting the heating on as the cost is prohibitive. Which means good hot food and hot drinks to help keep the cold out.

One of the best things you can do for yourself around this time of the year is when you are making one, make 2.
