I gotta say I think RS3 walks the line of hope and hopelessness on its Vampire quest line extremely well.
*A lot* of your allies die during it so there's always a threat but every single step gives you a better vampire killing tool so it never feels like it's totally hopeless either.

It's wild that despite living with my roommate for like 7 years now, I still call him by his screenname rather than his actual name. I do of course know his actual name, it's just second nature to me to use the screen name
