Celebrating 50 years of Portland Timbers soccer, this photo was taken in 1980, during the NASL years.

The "with a Willie, there's a way" was referring to a handmade sign that we had created for the two Willies (Anderson and Donachie).

Found out years later that "willie" was a slang term for... 😂

From my latest chat using A.I. --

Imagined story told in 1880, based on real history about a family's legacy of anti-slavery efforts in Detroit:

"Our family didn't end slavery. But we stood where we could. We opened doors. We told the truth. And sometimes, we helped row the boat."

Frankly, as someone rather skeptical about the use of A.I., in the last few days I've been impressed how it can help in creating narratives about my family history, just starting with info from public records to tell the tale!

Tomorrow in Portland, Argentine rocker Miguel Mateos!

Glad he had a few days off after San Diego and will be refreshed for the concert here... before heading off to Seattle, Calgary, and Vancouver. 👍

Already got my tickets. 😍

When using AI, sometimes you have to correct them!

I was asking about the Food for Peace during the JFK administration, and the answer AI gave me what that it "started in 1954".... Kennedy wasn't president then, so I had to point that out.

Then AI said they were wrong about that.

SMACK!!! 😂

Anyone remember hearing a song called "Strange Things Are Happening"? It was recorded by Red Buttons in 1953.

Seems very appropriate for 2025.

Even more today than yesterday.
Whoever made up the "joke" that was going around in 2016 about the presidential election candidates then (1st Canadian president, 1st Cuban president, 1st woman president...) must've not been joking about "the last American president" part.

Trying to recall some of the details about the "Dirty War" in Argentina that I'd learned from studying Latin American history, I asked AI which body of water was involved because I wasn't quite sure.

The answer I got was "sorry I cannot chat about this."

wtf???

Tomorrow would be a good day to watch "Casablanca" (again).

Unlike his character Rick Blaine, Humphrey Bogart would never have said, "I stick my neck out for nobody." Bogart was a strong supporter of social justice and civil rights.

Also, many of the actors in the film were immigrants or refugees.

Just watched the 1947 movie "T-Men" about U.S. Treasury agents investigating a counterfeit ring in and Los Angeles.

In one scene, Dennis O'Keefe as "Harrigan" says, "Did you ever spend 10 nights in a Turkish bath looking for a man? Well, don't!" 😂

So here's my imaginary dinner guest list:

Stanley Tucci, Jose Andres, Ina Garten, Henry Winkler, Dolly Parton, Tony Danza, Valerie Bertinelli, Rodney Crowell, Raul Malo, Trisha Yearwood, Isabel Lascurain... 😀

Currently reading Stanley Tucci's "What I Ate in One Year (and related thoughts)"... hearing his voice as I read his words and his humor comes through the pages, too.

Got me thinking what it would might like to be a guest at his dinner table and then who would be on my imaginary guest list...

Wondering if the Portland Timbers FC might be interested in any fan contributions for their 50th anniversary celebrations next year.

Found this 1947 ad in newspaper archives from the Detroit Free Press.

Pictured at the table in Sammy Sofferin's Wonder Bar in Detroit are L-R actor Dennis O'Keefe, screenwriter/lyricist Dorcas Cochran (Mrs. Jewell), and art director Edward C. Jewell.

O'Keefe and Jewell worked together on "T-Men".
