In the project "Diagnosing scientific disagreement on sustainability and economic growth", I will do a deep dive into what makes the disagreements between green-growth and degrowth advocates so persistent, and what the most promising strategies to work towards consensus are.

For me, the curious thing is that each view is backed up by science - or so it seems. It's just that from the vantage points of different research fields the problems and solutions look different. But not everyone can be right when views are starkly different, or can they?

For others, the pursuit of economic growth by rich countries is part of the problem. The link between environmental harms and economic growth seems difficult to erase quickly, so some think rich countries need to give up economic growth as a goal to sufficiently reduce environmental impacts.

For many, economic growth is an important part of the picture. Economic growth enables clean innovations facilitating the sustainability transition and is also important for many other reasons, or so the arguments go.

The scientific consensus is clear that we need to drastically reduce the harmful impacts that the economic system has on the environment. But there is disagreement on what are the best ways to do this.

More news: the Finnish Cultural Foundation (@skr.fi) will fund my project "Diagnosing scientific disagreement on sustainability and economic growth". This means I will be occupied with two sustainability-focused philosophy-of-science projects in the coming years.

It is essential that we can evaluate which experts are the best sources of information, judgment and advice in the sustainability transition. In the project, I will use the methods of philosophy of science to develop new perspectives to these questions.

The sustainability transition provides a fascinating and important case study, since different experts often make differing diagnoses of sustainability-related problems and offer different solutions them.

Experts themselves should have tools to discern where the limits of their own expertise lie, so that they can be transparent about those limits towards their non-expert audiences.

Scientific expertise is much needed in today's world. But it's not always easy to decide who the relevant, competent and trustworthy experts are in each issue. Knowledge users such as policymakers, journalists and citizens should understand which experts they should listen to in each issue.
