March flies (Diptera: Bibionidae) spend most of their lives as larvae in shallow soil. Once or twice a year those of the same species in a given area pupate and emerge as adults in unison. They then spend just a few days mating and laying eggs before they die. Palmyra Michigan, 28 May 2017.

My first louse (flat) flies of the year! Stenepteryx (Crataerina) hirundinis puparia (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) with flies emerging about 5 months early. I probably should have kept them somewhere cooler!

Robber flies (Diptera: Asilidae) are voracious predators of other insects. They patiently wait for prey to pass by and then grab them. They use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to inject digestive enzymes and then suck out the insides. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, Texas, 17 Jun 2017.

Greater bee flies (Diptera: Bombyliidae: Bombylius major) are found in woodlands thoughout much of North America. Adults are usually seen in the spring feeding on wildflowers. Their larvae, however, are parasitoids of wild bees. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina, 11 Apr 2016.

Day 23 of #InsectAdvent

As the angels spread their wings, so do the flies. Rhamphomyia marginata (Empididae) are found across Europe & unusually for animals, it is the females that form the flirty swarms. Maybe not such angelic behaviour 😉

Took me over an hour to film this much footage because the ruddy thing just keep fly and flying and flying, fast and low and stop for about a second before flying and flying....

Day 24 of #InsectAdvent and the flying reindeer have arrived!

Oh no they haven’t…

It’s a Ricardia sp (Richardiidae) that I collected from Honduran Cloud Forest, one of the many species of antlered flies.

The Nativity story is set in a stables in Bethlehem where the People were surrounded by animals, not all of them welcome. The stable fly Stomoxys calcitrans (Muscidae) gives the gift of a painful 'bite' to all attending mammals

And even the flies are getting festive. Sporting massive antlers akin to Moose or Reindeer, Phytalmia sp (Tephritidae) males, will use them to fight for their right.......to PARTY (with the opposite sex...)

Some True flies are predators, others feed on fungi or live on or inside hosts as parasites. They're vital pollinators, decomposers & can teach us about disease spread.
