In Angkor, "false doors" or "false entrances" served as symbolic thresholds between the worlds of the living and the dead. While appearing as doorways or gates, these structures were not intended for actual passage but rather to represent the boundary between the earthly realm and the afterlife.
In the context of Ta Prohm temple in Angkor, Cambodia, "false doors" refer to artistic representations of doors that do not lead anywhere. They are a common feature in Khmer architecture, and Ta Prohm is no exception. The eastern side of the central sanctuary usually had a real door, while the other three sides were adorned with false doors. False doors are a threshold between the worlds of the living and the dead, through which a deity or the spirit could enter and exit. False doors may have been associated with certain rituals or ceremonies performed at the temple. Built during the time of King Jayavarman VII and is best known as the temple where trees have been left intertwined with the stonework, much as it was uncovered from the jungle. It might be considered in a state of disrepair but there is a strange beauty in the marvelous strangler fig trees which provide a stunning display of the embrace between nature and the human handiwork. The temple's modern name, Bantãy Srĕi —the citadel of women or citadel of beauty—is probably related to the intricacy of the bas-relief carvings on the walls and the tiny dimensions of the buildings themselves. Some have speculated that it relates to the many devatas carved into the walls of the buildings. The special charm of this temple lies in its remarkable state of preservation, small size, and excellence of decoration. In ancient Khmer religious beliefs, the east was considered the most sacred direction, and the real door on the east represented a gateway to the divine realm. The false doors on the other sides could be seen as symbolic portals or connections to other aspects of the spiritual world. Bantãy Srĕi is built largely of red sandstone, a medium that lends itself to elaborate decorative wall carvings. Often spoken of as the ‘jewel of Khmer art’ for its exquisite and complex carvings, this miniature temple of pink sandstone has subtle colours best enjoyed in the accommodating light of the early part of the day or very late afternoon.

A central group of eroded rock formations appears at the foot of an imposing wall of variously textured rock cliffs. Sunlight rims the central formation, and shadow extends outward from it to the left. The wall of rock behind is entirely in shadow. The sky behind is streaked with wispy clouds, also lit by the sun.
