I used to make video game and tech content as a day job, from 2007 to 2020. Now I do QGIS stuff, Ignition SCADA things and water loss reduction shenanigans. I also write books that aren't very good. And I'm trying to make a game about a duck. Also, I run.

AUR and PSD jointly announced today a legislative proposal to ban all Unix-like operating systems in Romania, after discovering that they all contain a USR folder.
Treadmill running is weird. It's both more tiring than regular running and not as tiring at the same time. I think it's the constant pace that's the problem. I have the rhythm sense of a drunk hippopotamus, and keeping a constant pace is really not something I'm used to.

I got into playing Prototype a bit recently. A really fun game from the age where game developers had not yet figured out third person camera controls or aiming.

Listening to Nightwish's Noise and Dragonforce's Doomsday Party back to back really is setting the mood for the current times.

Well, vacation's over. Gotta head back to work tomorrow.
There's an amount of sadness in me at this prospect that wasn't there for the old jobs.
Sure, working at Games-Arena and GHD was tiring, but it was enjoyable.
I looked forward to doing new things in the coming year.

Now, there's just apathy

Finally got Jellyfin installed on Open Media Vault. Turns out I had to actually put something into apt's sources.list, since OMV doesn't use it.
And, man, Jellyfin is so much better than the homebrew version of Kodi I stuffed into my rooted TV.

This is where we're at people. I've hacked my own TV.

Bought a second hand running watch off a local on-line fleamarket. Got a message today that the order got canceled. The guy didn't send the watch in time.

This is a sign that either I should not get that watch, or that I should try harder to get the watch.

I will inevitably make the wrong choice.

The people working on the next Tropico game are going to have a hard time coming up with stuff that a deranged dictator would do, without it being seen as a personal attack which will result in the game getting banned or the dev team being kidnapped.

Welcome to 2026.

Make no delay.
Make no excuse.
Make them pay.

Some people spend Sunday mornings, before new year, sleeping in. Others spend it with their family. Me and four other nutjobs spent it running 10K at 0°C. Why do we do this? I don't know. At some point, something takes over and you just want to get far away, but in a circle, so you're back and tired

My wired internet connection is out. So, I hope it gets restored, otherwise all I can do this weekend is write, play video games. I can't get any work done.
What a tragedy.

There's a habit in this area of the world of people using personal yahoo e-mail addresses at work, which leads to funny situations where the the head accountant for the history museum has something like x_lizzy99 or PR is cccccam2000. The museum itself is museum@museum basically, so they can do that

The following is a comedic story about office hierarchy:

The section boss came to me yesterday with some course listings from the national water association and asked me if I'm teaching SCADA there. I said yes. He seemed to jokingly ask if we should send people to the course I'm teaching. Sure.

Mark my words. Somewhere, someone, someday will make a decent game where all the dialogue is:

"Ah, Unsunkten, it is you. You have came. You must rewynden the sepulture to restore balance."

And everyone will take with the utmost seriousness and call it the greatest narative experience of the decade

A decade ago I posed the question if people covering tech should themselves understand tech. There was some pushback to that idea as being gatekeepery. Not a lot. But there was.
I did not foresee geography.

I could not even think to make a joke about this.

We are beyond satire.
