RIP Lance Morrow, a great TIME writer of his day. His brief, pungent 1986 tribute to George Wallace captured an era. It closed with the notoriously racist leader receiving an honorary degree before a largely Black audience: "Wounded, in his wheelchair, subdued and sweet, he blew them kisses."
