fair enough, but no team has won the PL with more than 6 losses for decades, so they are pretty much looking at max 2 losses in the remaining 29 games to have the smallest of chance to win

They recorded the studio bits in May, impossible to rearrange the cuts and tasks for an episode on such short notice

I think too many are conflating Police Squad! with the movies that came later. He is a proper straight man in the TV series.

Having watching Guy Mont-Spelling Bee there are a couple of names I recognize, but can somebody tell me what kind of TM-role the contestants should fill (up-and-coming, comedy legend, the chaotic one, left-field choice etc).

Ligue 1 isn't that tough that they can't rotate all players, still dominate the league and give them plenty of rest before the CL games start to roll around, especially the knock-out games in January.

To be fair, the window have just been open, besides Wirtz it's basically just teams getting their squad ready for the club world cup or doing some quick FFP transfers. But we are unlikely to see teams (over)pay like Liverpool that often this summer.

And besides Wirtz, Frimpong (€40) and Tel (€35m) have joined PL clubs in recent weeks.

A couple, Todibo (€40m) to West Ham, Truffert (€13,5m) to Bournemouth and Cherki (€36,5m) to Man City

One of the points FIFA made when creating the expanded club world cup in 2019 was that it could replace the confederations cup as the main test event for future World Cup hosts.
June 17, 2025 at 4:48 PM
You are jumping around in the discussion with weird statements so it's hard to follow what you're trying to say? Marketing spiel? Bread in the America sandwich?

The confederations cup was for national teams, the club world cup started in 2000, and they have wanted to expand it for a decade now.
June 17, 2025 at 4:47 PM
And that's why Seattle Sounders participate in this edition of Club world cup (won it in 2022). The format got extended to not just include current regional champions, that's the whole point. FIFA chose to give the host spot to the winner of the Supporters' shield.
June 17, 2025 at 4:35 PM
I know very little of MLS and how they set up their league and cups, but the winner of the Supporters' Shield gets a spot in the Concacaf champions cup, so if you going to pick a host team, it makes sense picking one that has at least qualified for the right regional tournament.
June 17, 2025 at 4:21 PM
FIFA introduced the Club world cup back in 2000, and has pushing for an expanded version since the mid 2010's. It was basically going to happen back in 2021 (to be held in China), but the pandemic made them pull the plug. They settled on the format and the slot allocation in February 2023.
June 17, 2025 at 4:15 PM
Yes there were. The only spot not crystal clear on how to qualify was the mentioned host spot, which FIFA gave to the Supporters' Shield winner. And even that wasn't such an odd decision as some make it out to be, as the winners of the shield since 2006 gets a spot in the Concacaf champions cup
June 17, 2025 at 4:12 PM
It is the latter reason why we get 4 Brazilian teams (the four winners of Copa Libertados between 2021 and 2024) and just 2 from England, Spain, Germany and Italy (so no Liverpool, Barcelona etc), and why a team like RB Salzburg gets in as the ninth and last placed team by ranking.
June 17, 2025 at 2:54 PM
Two things are possibly difficult to understand. How FIFA chose the host spot (Inter Miami got it by winning the Supporters's Shield in 2024) and why they have a restriction of max 2 teams from each association (if not due to the winning the regional cup competitions).
June 17, 2025 at 2:52 PM
That means for example PSG as the current Champions league winner (24/25) will participate in the FIFA Intercontinetal cup in December 2025, and be one of the 12 UEFA teams for the Club World Cup in 2029.
June 17, 2025 at 2:46 PM
This Club world cup consist of 32 teams divided among the various regional confederations (UEFA has 12, Conmebol 6 etc) + 1 place for the host. The qualification is based on the winners of the confederation's top cup comps between 2021 and 2024 (additional teams added by ranking over the same years)
June 17, 2025 at 2:44 PM
How is the qualificiation process impenetrable? It is basically the same as it has been since the Club world cup began back in 2000. It is for the regional champions. As this extended format is meant to be held every 4th year, they also introduced the new FIFA Intercontinal Cup to held each year.
June 17, 2025 at 2:41 PM
You are thinking about the Supporter's Shield that got Inter Miami their spot in the CWC? I don't think something that has been given out since 1999 was "made up" just so Messi could win a trophy. Why FIFA decided to give the host spot to the winners of the particular trophy is more questionable
June 17, 2025 at 7:41 AM
By all means have a go at the extended format, the limit of max 2 teams from each member of UEFA (which meant RB Salzburg got in ahead of Barcelona) or the MLS Cup counting as a regional cup qualifier, but dn't hold Auckland City as a bad example as they had regularly played also in the old format
June 16, 2025 at 8:16 AM
The team of part-timers are there because they won their regional cup. Auckland had participated in 12 club world cups before this new expanded edition. The only difference is that they usually get knocked out in the first round, and the bigger teams join late under the old format.
