meditation on “being trans” vs “becoming trans” — in the same vein as my re-articulation of salomé, via: “transmedicalism’s teleological structure presumes a definitive & stable destination/end-point of “genderhood achieved/accomplished!” and applies a certain “progressivism” to the body/being”
my issue with a lot of trans (tbh queer, more broadly) discourse is that it is mostly based on prioritising “being trans” as more perceptible & legitimate than “becoming trans”, which treats transness as essence imo, as opposed to transness being involvement, participation, practice, constant (re-)embodiment, activity, labour, etc.! the latter acknowledges empirical complexity and also invites ppl to ask themselves, can they also become trans? is there an end-point or destination for “transness”, or identity, really — where one mistakes oneself for the Christian god on the 7th day, resting & believing that he’s “done” Creating the world? is “being trans” an aspiration towards being the Christian god, being the Creator (thing/essence) of something Complete, whereas merely being engaged in Creativity (process/activity) is seen as mortal (& thus undignified) incompletion? what if we all let go of trying to be the Christian god and lean into our mortal incompletion together instead, bc that mortal incompletion means there will be endless demand & need for Creativity
