The Eagles having Barkley, Dotson, and Hurts have made me do the unthinkable and root for a Philly team for more than one game (in situations that would benefit a Pittsburgh team) 😂

Home from SEAC. As always, a great time catching up with friends/colleagues and hearing about cool research. I visited Avery Island yesterday to see cool fields of pepper plants, a 2500 year old mound (that’s what we are standing on here), & the site of a project that a friend did 25 years ago.

I’m only peripherally involved in this project these days, but I am glad the City of Tulsa is still supporting this important work. It’s probably the most socially meaningful archaeological project that I will ever have worked on

RIP, Gary. You were kind, intelligent, supportive, and dedicated to the history of the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes. I’m glad that I had the privilege of knowing you.

We gave a lightning talk yesterday about the 2025 Spiro field school at Fresh from the Field: OU Archaeologists Share Their Stuff. Many of the archys on campus get together and give 5 minute presentations on summer projects. We had a great turnout! And I spy a bunch of our students in this photo…

31 hours of travel yesterday to get home from Italy. Worth it. Fun trip, cool archaeology, and good people. But it is nice to see my yard tonight after 7 straight weeks in the field spread across 2 continents!

Field season at Spiro is officially wrapped up for the year. Now I will enjoy my 2 days off before heading to Italy to meet up with the OU Classics field school. I’m tired enough that I might actually be able to sleep on the plane! 🤞

Tomorrow, February 28, let’s disrupt the status quo by spending ONLY at businesses that uplift our communities.

That means:
🚫 No gas from corporate giants
🚫 No fast food chains
🚫 No big-box retailers (Target, Walmart, Amazon, etc.)

It may be a new semester with new students, but the lab analysis for our Spiro Mounds project is still marching along

If you’ve been directly impacted by a pause or cancellation of an NIH study session, we @forbes.com would like to talk to you
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

If you don’t have one of these get one. I ordered some on a whim a couple of months ago. Had a massive grease fire in my smoker today and this put it out in about a minute. But I salvaged the meat! 😂

Today was a brew day (coffee stout). Apparently I walked 2 miles around my garage in the process 😂🍻 #homebrew

Inspired by this viral meme about DOGE: Research the US government has supported that can be made to sound silly, but that has contributed to human progress.

Valuable work can often be framed as absurd out of context. That doesn’t make funding research any less important.🧵
