Birder, moth-er, SW Hants, VC11.
Generally fed up with stuff, but granddaughters and moths help break the tedium.

Be very grateful if anyone better at gulls than me can pull apart my identifications in this checklist from Monday.

Seven species for the year now.

Stood in front of the world's most iconic skylines and I've been faffing about with seagulls 🙄
Unless I'm very much mistaken, Vega in flight, Mongolian on the water.

Another cool parasitic plant today in the shape of Balanophora fungosa.
February 3, 2026 at 11:22 AM
Thailand trip ongoing, all very excellent, although lacking in moths and no great bird photos to show off.
But this today will definitely get Taxon of the Trip: Sapria himalayana, a smaller (20cm) relative of Rafflesia, but stunning and spectacular nonetheless, as well as rare and unpredictable.

Lots of this presumed Idaea sp disturbed from rough grass on the outskirts of Chiang Mai this afternoon during a relaxed introductory amble. Needless to say, I have no idea what species they were!
Hopefully will see a few more decorative moths over the next three weeks.

2 of 2 in SW Hants last night was less than hoped for.
Chestnut on a sheet, and December Moth a victim of one of my army of False Widows.
Probably my last trap for at least a month.

Winter Moth found on the garage wall after my aborted patch birding session takes last night's tally to 3/3, about three moths better than I'd expected.

Bugger.
My usual quick access to my favourite bit of patch now closed off. Yes, there have been recent cliff falls, but the edge is easily avoided, all seems a bit nannyish.
Hopefully reopened before spring starts.

I am With Moth!
2026 in SW Hants kicks off with a Chestnut, and also a less expected Diamondback Moth (but I don't have the time or inclination to chase that about), so a total of 2/2!

Might be the height of optimism but mothing 2026 is underway. Possibly without the moths of course, but hoping the few degrees extra today and tonight will coax something out . . .

Boring #teammoth stats thread incoming!

In 2025 11854 moths of 550 species, over 124 traps (95.6 moths per trap) compared very favourably with 2024's 10533 of 512 in 168 attempts (62.7 per trap).
47 were new, taking the garden list to 783.
Lunar Hornet Moth & Ni Moth were highlights.

4 of 6 in the final SW Hants trap of the year.
Surprisingly included two potential @migrantmothuk.bsky.social with singles of Rusty-dot Pearl & Diamondback Moth.
Also two each of December Moth & Double-striped Pug.

5 of 4 (plus a lot of diptera) in SW Hants last night, and pretty much the 4 species I'd have predicted: Mottled Umber (x2), Double-striped Pug, Winter Moth & December Moth.
May try again tonight if it's not too wet or windy.

Work still providing the occasional moth (and yesterday 2 Red Admirals!), today's offerings being this Emmelina monodactyla and an Acleris ferrugana/notana.
May trap tonight . . .

36 of 5 in SW Hants last night, including a ridiculous THIRTY December Moths (I suspect others will have more though), most of which are shown here.
Also 3 Emmelina monodactyla and one each of Ypsolopha ustella, Dark Chestnut & Yellow-line Quaker.

A rather optimistic attempt with the trap last night, but two striking Mottled Umbers (plus a surprising variety of flies) as reward.
Tonight looks more suitable so will doubtless try again.

Ran the trap until 2130 yesterday evening and managed a NFY December Moth and a Yellow-line Quaker.
Former took the garden year list to a nice round 550 (exc aggs), where it will presumably now stay. Last year's final tally was 512 + aggs.

Some surprise @migrantmothuk.bsky.social action this morning with a Turnip and 3 Rusty-dot Pearls in a customer's porch (New Milton, SW Hants).
I think it's safe to assume that they've been there for a few days though!!

I think disappointing covers last night well here in SW Hants.
Just 16 of 11, with 1 Palpita vitrealis & 3 Rusty-dot Pearl the only @migrantmothuk.bsky.social interest.
Best record was a ludicrously late Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet (context in ALT).

15 of 7 in SW Hants last night, very firmly in the sulk zone (eg: 37 of 13 same date last year)

4 Red-green Carpet
3 LBAM
2 each Merveille du Jour, Double-striped Pug & November agg
1 each Beautiful Plume & Large Yellow Underwing.

November 6, 2025 at 7:21 AM
Finished with 5 of 5 in SW Hants last night: Emmelina monodactyla, November agg, White-point, Grey Pine Carpet & Red-green Carpet.
Plus a gazillion tiny flies.

Tonight should be a little calmer 🤞

A rather anticlimactic 22 of 16 in SW Hants last night, with NFY Brick the highlight.
Singles of Rush Veneer, Rusty-dot Pearl & White-point the only hints at migration.

Couldn't really pass up the opportunity to photograph the night's TEN Merveille du Jours.
Rounding them up was fine. Getting them to sit still for a pic a challenge. No way it was going to happen successfully on a lichen-covered tree trunk so the patio had to suffice!

55 of 24 in SW Hants last night was an excellent result.
Flounced Chestnut (x2) & Yellow-line Quaker were NFY. Also a very late, very fresh Wax Moth (2nd gen @ruthnewby.bsky.social ?). Turnip the best of the @migrantmothuk.bsky.social ; also 2 Diamondback & 3 White-point.
