I held the moon that hung behind the Parthenon For a moment and a half before I made a wish, And flung it over my left shoulder into the waters At the feet of Oceanus into the fountain of Trevi. I walked through the corridors of the Colosseum- As it lay in ruins, its marbles stolen to build domes Its stone walls broken, bare retelling horrors, deaths Leading out into cobbled streets where palaces rose. History unfolds, stories are written, victors defeated- But the only constant is the water and wine that flows, Empires fall, however tall they build their monuments What remains are exaggerations in sculpted stones. Something I wrote after a short holiday in Italy last month. #poetry
