In Turkey, university students are leading the demonstrations. Keep in mind that they haven't seen any other government than the AKP governments, which have repeatedly repressed civil society and peaceful protests. These students are now protesting both despite and because of that.

For what it's worth, let's keep in mind that Turkey has a long history of government repression but also of mass protests. Here's hoping that the force of the latter will somehow prevail over the force of the former.

Thousands of people gather at the police HQ in #Istanbul where elected mayor and Erdogan's most important competitor Imamoglu is being held. Police closed the road, and many road into the city towards squares where people can gather to protest. Protests are banned. Expect violence. #Turkey

Er komen geluiden uit Europa om steun te betuigen aan Imamoglu na zijn (politieke) arrestatie, maar tegelijkertijd kijkt Europa ook naar Erdogan als navo-partner in de verdediging tegen Rusland. Erdogan doet dit omdat hij weet dat hij het kan maken met een Europa die andere zaken aan het hoofd heeft

De vraag die iedereen heeft in Turkije nu heeft is: waar gaat het heen met de democratie nu Erdogans belangrijkste opponent + entourage is gearresteerd. Zogeheten 'kayyum' werd al eerder gedaan bij Koerdische burgemeesters in het oosten vh land, maar niet eerder bij 's lands grootste oppositiepartij
