❄️🚗 Snow and Ice Can Become Deadly Projectiles

The groundhog might be running show right now, but cold weather and snow are still very real risks for our community. While this photo gives us a laugh, your safety in winter conditions is something we take seriously.

No groundhogs were harmed in the making of this photo📷

During winter weather events, when many can remain safely at home, our EMS providers and responders continue to operate in hazardous conditions, navigating icy roads, blowing snow, and freezing temperatures — to ensure emergency care remains available.

While this does not look like much, this is what we are seeing across the entire county. Blowing snow across already icy roads and even into roads that have been cleared.

Please use caution if you must drive, especially in the morning, as winds will continue throughout the night.

🏠 Surry County Weather Reminder

Today is a good day to slow down and stay home if you can. Cozy blankets, warm coffee and cocoa, and time with family beat icy roads and cold winds any day.

When travel isn’t necessary, staying off the roads helps keep you safe. ☕🔥❄️

❄️ Roads May Look Clear — But They’re Not Safe ❄️

This is what winter driving really looks like across our area right now. A thin layer of packed snow and ice can turn any road into a skating rink, especially on curves, shaded areas, and bridges.

⚠️ Take it slow. Arrive safely.

⚠️ Hidden Hazard Alert: Ice Under New Snow ⚠️

Fresh snowfall can make roads and sidewalks look safer—but it often hides leftover ice underneath. That thin layer of snow can mask slick surfaces, turning a normal step or short drive into a serious risk.

Stay safe.

Winter Weather Safety Alert ❄️🚗

The latest National Weather Service forecast shows snow accumulating from Friday through Sunday, with higher totals possible south of our area. Even light snowfall can create hazardous travel conditions, especially in very cold temperatures.

We’ve seen a good melt today with warmer temperatures, but many roads are still ice-covered or only partially clear. No roadway is 100% safe.

As temperatures drop tonight, any remaining moisture will refreeze. Please slow down and allow extra travel time.

⚠️ Slippery Conditions Alert! ❄️

Ice-covered sidewalks, parking lots, and steps can turn a simple walk into a dangerous fall in seconds.

Black Ice: The Hidden Danger ❄️

Black ice is nearly invisible but extremely hazardous. With reduced traction, longer stopping distances, and bridges freezing before surrounding roads, even a short trip can quickly become dangerous.
