Full spoilers for this, it takes a full view of this game to talk about what I wanna talk about for this game. E33 is a monumental achievement in my mind, to present such a compelling question at the end that frames everything you've experienced in cerebral and deeply emotional contrasts, to bring people wildly different takeaways, to mean different things to different people. And also, the game is rock solid throughout, from beginning to end. Rarely is a turn based JRPG paced so well, without dragging its feet, letting its scope get away from itself, or letting the battle system just plain get old, and ALSO serving as a feast for the senses, with corners cut only in places that don't detract at all from the intended experience. This game is 100% worth playing if you haven't and the premise, story or gameplay, interests you even a little, even if the hype puts you off, even if the internet discourse on release soured you, even if popular trendy games aren't your thing. Last warning for spoilers! Acts I and II are so goddamn good. There's something so good about likeable characters being thrust into unfamiliar, harsh, yet beautiful environs. It's the appeal of Xenoblade 1 for me, and E33 does everything right to make the premise, world, and characters work with the mystery and goal of the Paintress and gommage, the immediate naturalness of the main characters, very strong and efficient "show don't tell" at the beginning, and the dire tone on starting the Expedition. All while that's going on, the cast slowly grows, the tone gets lighter, the Continent becomes more familiar, legit exploring is happening, then... Act II. It's really crazy what they do to make you like Gustave, make him feel like the glue holding everyone together, give him a super cool protagonist aura attack, locking most of his skill tree to make you think of future story developments...and nah, he's gone. What's even crueler is how someone could keep thinking "ah well, sure we'll bring him back" signposted by a few systems: the fact that there were locked nodes on the skill tree, that when you get the final party member you're one short of two full party lineups, and hey, he was the POV character we started with, it'd be hype to bring him back, JRPGs are guilty of cheesy hype very often. But reaching the end of Act II and beyond it really starts to sink in...no, he's gone. We really did say goodbye to him. This tension is one of the many great narrative tricks the game does to make the final themes hit hard, even for people who've never experienced loss, because it makes you experience it twofold in the narrative and systems. The really cool thing I love about the Act II to Act III transition is that it does a lot to make the game and narrative feel vastly different, in ways that further what the game's about. In Acts I and II, the setting feels relatively grounded because the setting is real to the characters. Life and death matters, the world is full of unexplained mystery and danger, and you get the sense that generations have come and gone without "piercing the veil". The world is full of people like us, struggling, not making sense of much, and trying to be, to exist. Then, Act III lets us "pierce the veil". Massive truths are revealed, and everything you see is more or less explainable now. You can fly to anywhere, everywhere you can see now, instead of looking up and wondering what's beyond your reach. And, most importantly to me, the damage cap is lifted. All stopgaps to exploring and getting to truly know the world's every nook and cranny is lifted, and while most of it kicks your ass at the start, it doesn't make much to reach levels of power that could only be dreamed of at the peak of Act II, back when the world was harsh and beautiful, when things seemed realer. Because now we know...we're in a painting, which throws off everything we've come to understand and experience up til now...right? Speaking as Lune and Sciel, absolutely, although they chose to focus on the threat in front of them that's already wiped out almost everyone they know, so like, understandbly they won't have much to think about it yet. But for us? Does knowing that the story of E33's Act I and II are in-universe in a supernatural/living painting really change what we think about it, what we felt? Put a pin in that. Either way, Act III's freedom and largely optional nature changes the feel of the game; not in a better or worse way, but a different way to illustrate our changed relationship with the world. To us, E33 in Act III becomes less a story, a linear adventure where we're pulled from point to point with limited optional curiosities littering the way, meant to suck us into a fiction...and it starts to feel more "video game-y", where the focus of number go up and player curiosity drives the experience, because its at this point our understanding and relationship to the world has changed. We're more aware of the world's nature as a construct, and similarly, the way we progress and see more of the world is changed, more like the construct it is, as "more video game and lore". It's in the ending choice where the game pulls its final rug pull, forcing you to make a decision about what actually matters, what these two halves of the game mean to you. Most importantly, despite the implicit feeling that Verso's ending is the better one, I feel that if it is, it's only slightly. What gets me most about the ending choice in the moment, before seeing either ending, you really do have to weigh the existence, the sentience, lives, of everyone in the painting vs. some family in grieving you don't actually know too much about it. From that alone, it's easy to see why people would pick Maelle as their first instinct. But my first instinct was Verso's ending. The angle I take is that the painting, while originally… expression of a boy's imagination, has been painted over many times by the Dessendre family's grief. It's shown everywhere, in all the details of the game, and even in the characters themselves. The world itself is drooping and frozen itself with grief, like a widow endlessly staring at a picture of their deceased loved one, remembering everything at once, all the joys of the past and all the emptiness of the present and crucially, no future set ahead of them, because what's a future even mean without them? A Jacob Geller video I watched mentions that even Lune and Sciel's character moments parallel what happens to the Dessendres, and it doesn't seem a coincidence to me that Gustave looks quite a bit like a cross between Verso and Renoir. Plus, a journal entry you find compares a truly good painting as both a mirror and a window. No matter what gets painted or created in the setting of Expedition 33, it's rooted back to the Dessedres and their grief over losing Verso in some way, and they've had a lifetime of painting and creating to create something new, to try to move on with new ideas, but they don't, they can't, not while they're here in this canvas, robbing this world of a potential future where there's a future worth looking forward to. I wasn't thinking of all of this when I made my choice, but I was absolutely thinking: Maelle is beginning to trap herself in the same way as the mother did. She deserves a chance to move on, to have a future. Crucially, while that's basically what Renoir's end goals was, the perspective of painted!Verso pulling her out of the painting vs. Renoir doing it has a lot, a lot of significance. Renoir outright says it in the final fight against him: we must accept things as they are, not how we want them to be. Renoir is dismissive of the power of imagination, of the potential healing of pretending to be somewhere else, someone else for a while, to explore things how they could be, not as they are. He

Idk why I find myself watching more Marvel these days but hey...I was told this one was more Rocket Raccoon and I'm not above that
It's an okay to fine Marvel film (in my mind: popcorn flick, passable to actually funny attempts at humor, shit action but cool CG destruction of environments, enjoyable character dynamics, and if it's an actually good Marvel film there'll be a little swell in your heart at the selfless sacrifice bit, but I don't remember any Marvel film that's actually achieved that besides maaybe the first guardians movie), I feel personally vindicated that homophobic Mario's more or less retired at the end of the film, I like that Rocket has a backstory but dislike how he's fridge'd for most of the film (but I do like that the crew will fling themselves at corpos to save Rocket cuz same), I like how at least this film isn't self serious and the Guardians are selfless heroes at the end of the day still, and while the whole supercharged eugenics thing could have easily been explored much more deeply, at least the villain behind it all is unapologetically evil and even a little hammy about it cuz that's how freaks who subscribe to thinking along those lines really are at heart. Humor softly hits as much as it outright misses. That's kinda it...better than several hours of scrolling social media, but this wouldn't get me outta the home to the movie theater. I think Rocket's backstory coulda hit harder if current day Rocket had the chance to talk to Anybody about it, the only thing we get that I remember is like, him getting revenge on the villain and having a moment to himself before saving the bioengineered experiments/to-be-experimentee's, which, with everything else the movie's handling with the other subplots and character dynamics, I'm glad it got even that much, but c'mon man...
