Uggggh...I need to write a post for AaE!

If we get a shiny new bug introduced to the US, do farmworkers have to expose themselves to more hazardous chemicals in order to bring us food?

I am, like, so unforgivably behind on AaE that it's not even funny.

So let's do a thread about pesticides in cherries!

I think my next recycled post from Twitter is going to be the story of the beetles which age backwards.

I'm going to be reposting stuff from AaE's Twitter over to BlueSky for the next few weeks, starting with our greatest hits.

This was a thread I'm particularly proud of-the story of Rocky Mountian Spotted Fever.
When the first white settlers arrived in Montana, the native Salish people warned them to not settle the West side of the Bitterroot River.

Ignoring these warnings, a small group of people colonized that side of the river.

Three quarters-75%-died of a mysterious disease.

Hey, to all my tens of followers...

I'm reinvigorating AaE here on BlueSky, and want to follow artists and other people who aren't necessarily involved in the entomology community to avoid an information silo.

Who should I follow?

Hiya! I'm all in for wasps.

Here's maybe the poster child for Australian mutillids, a Bothriomutilla rugicollis female.

Many velvet-ants parasitize other aculeate wasps, so the heavy sculpturing might be defensive armor protecting her against potential host wasps. 🤘🏼

Heya! It is Monday. Again.

Here's a male mutillid from Australia...and they call chrysidids the jewel wasps! Pah.

You know, I started #WaspLove with Amy Toth SO LONG AGO on Twitter as a way to celebrate Hymenopteran biology and biodiversity...it's been, what, a decade?

The hashtag made over here on BlueSky, and is still going strong!

Yeah, I'll fix my avatar later, I'm sure.

I've always loved Strepsipterans, so they're kind of my online mascot.

A lot of doctors rightfully complaining about Dr. Oz, Jay Bhattacharya, and RFK. Jr, etc being tapped for important health related positions.

Honest question: What are their lobbying groups actually doing about this?

Announcement:

AaE will be moving to BlueSky soon.

My first objective: Find a good deck with Shelob, Child of Unogliant as a commander.

Are there any good Shelob decks out there?

Let's find out!

I'm going to start my reviews by discussing how I made my current deck, The Locust God.

It's based off the one in this video, although it has many additions (which I'll discuss soon).

Must suck to realize that there are some forms of epistemic grounding that you and your pals can't simply purchase and torch to the ground.

So I'm going to start reviewing arthropod-themed Magic: The Gathering decks suggested by YouTubers.

I don't know how often I'm going to be able to do this, because actually playtesting decks is a lot of work.

Methodology to follow.

Is there a place online to ask VERY basic programming questions?
September 15, 2023 at 2:35 AM
I really hope BlueSky becomes the next Twitter.

I miss doing the threads I did on AaE, which got millions of impressions.

It's not QUITE time to start in on those again, but once BSky hits 10M, that might be the time.
The current v1 Bluesky system is designed to scale to 1M users. And today we're going to hit 1M users!

We will, of course, keep pushing things and *try* to smoothly transition to the v2 Bluesky system later this year. It's designed for >10M users.

We just have to finish building the v2 system!

Daily insect fact:

There are probably more insects which genetically modify their hosts, than there are vertebrates.

Microgastrinae alone is estimated at ~50K species, and it's just one of eight groups of wasps which do this.

The entire phylum chordata has just ~80K species

Daily bug fact:

There are bees that are immune to DDT.

Only like, two papers on the topic though...so it's a huge mystery as to why.

One of the strangest (harmless) things I regularly see smart people who should know better do on the other site is retweet an account that says it's written by famous scientist Richard Feynman.

One way you can tell it's not actually him is that he died in 1988.

Angelenopsis sp.

Very common around houses, and can be ID'd by their funnel shaped webs.
Spider-sky, what species of spider is this? My brother in Colorado asked me and I told him it’s not a fish 🧪

Fun fact: There are some plants which most likely see, and they use this ability to mimic other plants.
SEEING. WITHOUT. EYES.

Opsins are fucking everywhere, folks. And not just light/dark, but colors. All the way down the phylogenetic tree to the roots.

Anyone play Magic: The Gathering?

Would really love advice for a Locust God deck I'm building.

I really need to do stuff like upload a profile pic, LOL.

I'll do that this weekend.
