Stuff's Broken
@stuffsbroken.bsky.social
Lately I can't go a single day without bad processes or tech blocking my way.
Last month, BMW recalled thousands of cars due to a software bug that caused the wheel to turn when stationary. The coverage was hilarious - cars turning their own steering wheels is not new. Modern cars do it dangerously and unhelpfully all the time - and you can't stop them. #enshittification
"it’s rare to see [software] that makes the car’s steering wheel turn on its own" is this a joke? My @volkswagen.bsky.social has "lane assist" which turns itself back on no matter how often I turn it off. It literally steers the car when it perceives I'm heading off lane and is right .01% of times

Surely these stupid eco bottle caps are a false economy?

How much extra water is used cleaning all the extra spills? How many more disposable cleaning products?

And that's before we talk about accessibility, convenience, and minor scratches. I care about genuine eco progress, not this bollocks.

When I'm saving a file or photo to @microsoft.com OneDrive on my Android phone, it helpfully lets me create a new folder to save to. Unhelpfully, it then takes me right back to my top level OneDrive folder - so I have to click all the way back through to save. Maximum inconvenience. #badtech

a result that was entirely predictable from research used to justify use of the jabs in the first place. let's focus on healthy habits like exercise and good food instead of obsession with the number on the scale #bodyneutrality #badmedicine

Overweight people shed large amounts on jabs but gain 0.8 kg a month on average once off them, study shows.

PureGym's PIN-controlled doors have a cooldown period. After using one, you can't use ANY other entry without waiting. And there are two successive doors to enter my gym. So I have to endure this pointless cooldown period every visit.

I demand my ten seconds back.

Sturgeon was right that [at least] 90% of everything is crap.

But fixing that is beyond me, and I can't always be constructive. So I've changed my handle/name from "FixingSturgeonsLaw" to "Stuff's Broken".

I disabled web protection on MSDefender (Android) for privacy reasons. Now I get 6+ notifications a day that I don't want or need - and I can't turn them off. eurgh #techfail

How did we end up with touch screen controls in basically every car? Who agreed to this? It sucks. They take our visual attention away from the road and don't even function for some people. #techfail

If I select a 3h delay on my brand new washing machine, it delays for 1h. There is no option for a 1h or even 2h delay. Wish I could buy appliances from the 1990s. #techfail #beko

My Hisense dryer's heat exchanger can't be removed. This means I can't clean it - which isn't safe. The manual says to use a soft brush vacuum... but heat exchangers in dryers stay wet for ages, and vacuums don't like wet. I've asked Hisense what I'm supposed to do. #hisense #techfail

Hey @microsoft.com, Outlook's Schedule Send functionality is great in theory but ruined by the fact that you don't let users decide when they can use it. We shouldn't need blogs like this to give us "workarounds" for simple features narrowmiscellany.wordpress.com/2025/01/26/v... #techfail #badux
“Viva Insights won’t obey!” How to make Outlook Schedule Send do what it’s supposed to
It’s a familiar problem to those of us who use Viva Insight’s “Schedule Send” function in Outlook: you want to Schedule Send for the email you are writing, but the option to…

British Gas's account management and "contact us" systems don't work and haven't done for years. I have two accounts, can't access either of them, and can't contact them. I've asked them to fix this. #BritishGas #techfail #welcometothefuture 1/8

Last month, South East Water told me my payments were increasing by 53%. My account showed I should increase by a further 81% (176% total). I asked them to change their automated comms. Someone called me back to say they were looking at exactly this - great! #SouthEastWaterUK #waterbills #techfail

I signed up for Threads using my new instagram account and was immediately blocked. I didn't even know until I'd submitted a selfie - ostensibly for verification - and was presented with an "appeal" screen. I've asked Meta/ig to fix this - I know I'm not alone. #threads #techfail

A new release from contemporary rapper Q5 is currently showing against the Spotify account of 80s hard/classic rock band of the same name. I've asked Spotify to fix this. #Spotify #Q5 #spotifyerror #techfail
