Indiana Pawpaw Fest is only about a week away: September 6-7 in Merom, IN. This year I'll be teaching a fun class about edible native plants at the fest on Saturday the 6th, right after the pawpaw contest (the contest starts at 1pm). I hope to see you there!

Are you attending Ohio Pawpaw Fest this year? If so, I may have a work-trade opportunity for you! Message me for more info.

I am grateful to be welcomed back to another meeting of the Diverse Corn Belt project! Once again I did my best to represent the needs and advantages of small diversified Indiana farmers, and I learned much from the experience and wisdom of the other collaborators. Good conversations all around.

Tomatoes are supposed to be me-high by the fourth of July. Isn’t that the saying? 😂🍅🌴

Garlic harvest day! Ever made a garlic braid? It’s a fun, decorative, and functional way to hang fresh garlic to dry. I’ll hang the braid from a hook on my screened porch for a month or two before storage. (Note: I don’t wear them like a necklace to parties. Only in the garden. 🧄🧛‍♀️👃)

First ripe tomato of summer. Black Krim. Not a good picture, but an amazing tomato. 🤤

The ecosystem is constantly rebalancing on its journey towards recovery. Every year it seems that one population booms above all others. This year, in out ninth summer, that creature is the damselfly. Welcome to our highly favored mosquito-eating friends!

It's been one week since I transferred a swarm into this yellow hive, which means it's finally okay to look inside to see if they decided to stay and make it a home. The suspense has been killing me. Here's a video of the big opening!

I caught a bee swarm! Miraculously, gratefully, I noticed a swarm last night and was able to move them into a new hive box in my apiary. I hope they like it and choose to stay! Go team yellow 💛🐝🏡

We are all happier since the garden fence came down. The bunnies moved back to the woods, and no one is ripping up my tomato plants any more. The snakes are back in the garden controlling the voles. Annie has 24/7 access to catnip. Win. Win. Win.

Several pawpaw trees are blooming in the orchard this year. I wonder if there will be fruit. ✌️💚🥭

The tomato plants are supposed to be knee high by the 4th of May, right? Isn't that the old saying? 🤣

It’s mid-April, and my bees are thriving! I changed almost everything about the way I keep bees last year, and it worked. Finally, I have a year-old hive. I filmed my entire hive inspection to share with you all. Watch on the blog!

I made this garden bed out of almost 100% reclaimed, recycled, and repurposed materials. Built from wood leftover from other projects and filled with straw reused from the bees’ winter windbreak, manure from the chickens, and composted reused potting soil from microgreens.
