Promoters of #cycling / #micromobility claim that these modes improve individual or societal health. But, these issues are more complex. Many people in the world cycle in polluted air and on unsafe streets. #Walking / #publictransport are also modes that provide physical activity: lnkd.in/eaqrVRER

Bicycles on trains enables #velotourism and commuting, but in most markets it is complex and inconsistent. #EU legislation will eventually mandate minimum carriage rules, but for many operators this is lost revenue and operational complexity. Much as I enjoy #cycling that is not why this issue is important.
As a cyclist, #micromobility or #publictransport user or #pedestrian, thinking about cycling encourages development of better, more inclusive and safer spaces.

Is lack of #data blocking the bigger picture in terms of #cycling / #micromobility? Having looked at data from global cities only a few offer consistent and pan-urban modal split data. Without quality data how can we build #sustainablemobility? #EUHorizon

There are 1bn #bicycles in the world vs 1.5bn cars. I've taken a number of inspirations from these figures in my pending book on #cycling and #micromobility as well as building truly #sustainable cities.

#Velotourism (cycle tourism) is an opportunity to grow local economies, jobs and disperse #tourism activity. Within the #EU there were an estimated 2.3bn cycle tourism trips in 2018 with an economic value of €44bn. This is linked to half a million jobs. These issues are explored in my upcoming book.

Brussels has done much to provide better infrastructure for cyclists and micro-mobility in a city that is still dominated by car traffic. This shows what can be done and builds on increasing cycle promotion in neighbouring Flanders.

Great to attend the #CIE / #CONEBI Cycling Industry summit in Brussels. Some great insights discussed: the need for more data (but what data?); better infrastructure still needs to lead the transition to cycling; the cycling industry needs to speak in a co-ordinated voice to policymakers.

Great to be at the #CIE #Conebi joint event in Brussels today looking #EU #CyclingPolicy. Also, to build interest in my pending book on cycling policy in a global context.
