Head of Learning Systems (Platforms) at the OpenUniversity. Interested in how the future will look. Particularly learning. I'm easily distracted.
In my dream last night Chrissie Hynde and New Model Army announced they were going to do a cover of ‘Fairy Tale of New York’.

I wouldn’t mind hearing that to be honest.

Always be recruiting. Always be looking out for the talented, the original thinkers, the ones who do more than talk. Take note of those who create impact regardless of their position, the big successes, the small achievements that signal real ability. Keep an eye on those who develop others 1/

Goodbye to the Manor Quay. Had some good nights there. It’s where I got together with my wife, and I saw some decent bands.

As part of my daughter’s school’s mobile phone ban (they get locked in special bags) I have to write a letter to the teachers on any day she decides not to take hers in.

The world’s turned upside down.

These are good tips. Basically, learn by doing the right things, even if no one is watching.

Impressed to see Google’s AI Overview has the rules to Mornington Crescent. Very handy reference.

These findings provide strong evidence that generative AI, when implemented thoughtfully with teacher support, can function effectively as a virtual tutor.”
New randomized, controlled trial by the World Bank of students using GPT-4 as a tutor in Nigeria. Six weeks of after-school AI tutoring = 2 years of typical learning gains, outperforming 80% of other educational interventions.

And it helped all students, especially girls who were initially behind.

Ah, it’s that time of year when I find out just how much my daughter has been listening to my Spotify account (despite her having her own). To be fair, Olivia Rodrigo has some real toe-tappers #unwrapped

Social media ban for under-16s 'on the table' in UK

You know what else I'd like to know is 'on the table'? Safeguards or exemptions for young people and teens who will be legitimately harmed by this move.

Had a great visit to the Tim Burton exhibition at the Design Museum yesterday. I’d recommend it to any fans. Think it runs until Feb ‘25. Having a pre-Christmas potter around London was nice as well.

A rare day on campus for a full day of meetings, including the inaugural get together for our Product Leaders. I’m excited at this point. Will be shattered later.

Found my first blog from 13 years ago. It was about what I saw as the need for the Open University to adapt to take into account future competition in the online learning space.

Breaks Teams calls you say…interesting…
Just a tip to avoid updating your Mac to OS15.0 :-). It breaks a lot of security products, which in turn stops other things working, such as Teams calls.

I’ve come onto campus for a day. The face to face meeting I’m here for is delayed as someone is stuck on the motorway. Everyone else in the open plan area are in Teams meetings. The noise is incredible. Reminds me of when I worked in a call centre. Not sure this is more productive than remote.

In London this morning I caught one of the bands of the Foot Guards warming up at their barracks. Very impressive.

Particularly as they did the theme tune to one of my favourite 70s kids cartoons, ‘Battle of the Planets’.

According to our stats it seems our online tutorial system recorded over one million minutes of attendance on Monday. Not bad at all.

I think we're going to refer to it as the Million Minute Monday from now on.
