The likely path of the asteroid 2024 YR4 has drifted away from Earth and toward the Moon. Here is what the view from the small Asteroid could be at closest approach to the Moon, extrapolated from the most recent visualization on NASA's Eyes On Asteroids. Sunlight and Earthlight shine on both.
This digital painting portrays the Asteroid 2024 YR4 at the closest approach to the Moon, at about 15:38 UT December 22, 2032. We are near the This small (130-300 foot / 40-90 meter diameter) stony Asteroid. This digital painting is based on the view of this event shown (as of February 20 2025) on NASA's Eyes on Asteroids. The path is updated at that site often according to new information so this attempt at forecasting what one would see near the asteroid at that time is probably ephemeral. I set up and rendered the Moon in 3D in the proper phase and viewpoint in Electric Image Animator. (Yes I am one of the last users, fitting because I was one of the first beta tester way back when) This Moon render was placed over my digital starfield used for my fulldome Planetarium animations, oriented to approximate the star field that would be in the background. The Asteroid was entirely hand painted in Photoshop. Both the Asteroid and the Moon are lit by the Sun in a crescent phase. Much of the night sides of both are also lit by blue-gray 'Earth shine' from the bright Earth nearly behind us. The parts of the Asteroid and the Moon lit by neither the Sun or Earth are pitch black against the sky background, which bears a faint diffuse glowing band of the Zodiacal Light which extends from the Sun. A faint diffuse 'Zodiacal band' also wraps across the entire ecliptic plane of our inner Solar System skies.
