Consider also, for a moment, that one of these propositions is pushed as a rock hard political consensus, widely believed common sense and the other derided everywhere as naive idealism or envy/class hatred.

And *still* the latter is a more common belief.
I’d suggest that people who answer this question “migrants” have made a very specific choice, and are unlikely to be amenable to appeals to reason
