I am unsure why I am here?
Perhaps this is my last resort.

I will resist calling it any kind of a paradise
Drizzly start to the day, but had cleared by the time I got into the woods

And although damp and a bit chilly, still really nice being out in the woods again, checking nest boxes

Found several Wood Mice and a couple of Yellow Neck Mice

But more importantly thirteen Common Dormice all good weights

I have just been watching a Great Spotted Woodpecker in my garden

They have in the past been, to the best of my knowledge, infrequent visitors

But this is the second time in the last three weeks. And last time, was using one of the bird feeders

Hopefully a more regular visitor in the future

Way into Autumn and the weather is becoming a little harder on the wildlife ... and at times me also.

But when we get a sunnier day, it still seems a bit like Summer is still with us.

Shame on those organisations that fail to protect rare and endangered wildlife.

Sadly this seems to be the political landscape of today.

Dormice
Today was to be the last monitoring day for this year
But that has now changed and next month will be the last, as today we found 29 Dormice of varies ages and consequently feel that a late survey is appropriate for next month.
We even found one of the regulars, for the third time this year

Out in the woods.

Lots of Fungi.
I am not very well informed regarding the various types, but that does not stop me appreciating them

I saw the first cluster (on a tree stump) across the bonnet of my car as I parked

And the larger single one (about the size of a dinner plate) deep within the wood

Conservation day

No Dormice today, although a Wood Mouse nest in almost every other box

Several of the boxes filled to the brim with hoarded Acorns
Unfortunately, for the Mice that cached them, I emptied them all out

If discovered by Squirrels, they will chew their way in, destroying the box

Its been a few days since we lost another of the great conservationists, Jane Goodall. And it has taken a while for me to process this
Alongside Dian Fossey and Simona Kossack these 3 were to me amongst the greats
Not for what they did, but how went about it
Will we see their kind of bravery again?

A recent visit to a RSPB reserve.
It has been a good year for nuts and berries

Susan the squirrel has now put in an appearance.
I have not seen her for most of the summer.

From the dirt on her nose you can be sure she is burying everything I give her

Now that Autumn is well and truely with us and the weather is becoming increasingly inclement, I have decided to set up the winter bird feeding station a little earlier this year.

Yes, it is a re-purposed Rotary Washing Line

Conservation day site 3

Arrived onsite today and lightly raining, but by the time we were into the woods it had become increasingly dark and we joked that we should have had torches

But we still managed to find five Dormice

By the end we were all a bit soggy, and only then did the sun appear

Today I made a new friend.
And it only took a handful of Acorns.

Smaller location with fewer nest boxes to check.

Last month I found my first Dormouse nest since I started monitoring there, and this month a second nest only about 25m away from the previous.

But this time it had a resident in situ.
First Dormouse recorded at that site.

Conservation day site 1.
Met the new Enviromental Conservation Officer who tagged along for a while, for an informal chat and to bring him up to date with how the Dormouse monitoring is going
No Dormice today but did find a Dormouse nest, in a location where I have not previously recorded any finds

Dormice sometimes like to make use of old birds nests. The mossy nests created by Wrens are often favoured.

But when the mood takes them they can create quite well structured and cosy nests.

And then sometimes you feel that perhaps they just could not be particularly bothered.

After an awful day yesterday where everything went wrong

Today have been into town and
Had 'Chips to go' from favourite Chippie
Bought new Earings and a really nice piece of Labradorite
Complete set of Frasier
Large bag of Dolly Mixtures

And now sat in bar with double Scotch on the rocks

Chilled

Glorious sunny day and two of us out in the woods.

It turned into a bit of a rescue mission when we discovered a damaged nest box, exposing inside, a rather makeshift nest, containing 'Pinks', baby Dormice.

New box installed. Nest, Mom and all babies transfered successfully.

A happy ending

Peaceful, if somewhat hot morning alone in the woods.

Plenty of small Birds, Bees, Butterflies, Damsels and Dragonflies.

Checking nest boxes, and several Woodmice in residence but no Dormice today

But at one small site I visited, where I have never yet found a single Dormouse, I did find this...

Sat on Eastbourne seafront.
Its a bit cloudy, warm and the sun is breaking through.
The sea is flat greenish blue but the beach is empty.
Most of the little kiosks are closed and few people about. Perhaps more a weekend tourist town?
I'm really not feeling that seaside town vibe we have in Hastings

Conservation day.
Just a very cute moment from my morning in the woods today.

Conservation day.
This morning has mostly been hot and sticky in the woods.
Ending with me sitting by a pond watching Dragonflies.

St Leonards-on-Sea.
Sitting in a small bar with a cold drink and listening to mellow music.
Is this where life is taking me?

I will not resist.
