Not much in the way of Aurora so far in Western NC. A large peak at 7pm showed some cotton candy, otherwise it stayed low on the horizon and has diminished at around 9pm. Hopefully stronger stuff to come over the next 24 to 36 hrs. #aurora #darkskies #astronomy

Jupiter spins at over 28000 mph making a full revolution in less than 10 hours. The red spot (upper right) disappears and Moon Io makes transit (lower right) during wonderful winter imaging session . Get out and enjoy Jupiter at its brightest & all the winter sky!

We were not very optimistic with regard to the weather. November's DSO night turned out fantastic! We got to see just about every object worth sharing through our many various optics, Jupiter being the exception as it was a little too low at the end of the night. #darkskies

Occasionally members like to revive their relationship with the night. One way of doing this is through astrophotography, a low impact hobby. You can achieve fascinating images with inexpensive sensors. For instance, the Pleiades was shot using an old dslr. Credit: D. Heflin x 3 C. Dalton x 1.

An emerald color of comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN) is seen in front of a dense southern milky way backdrop. This comet image was taken by one of our volunteers during the October DSO night. #Boone #appstate #astrophotograpy #astronomy #lightpollution #publichealth
