Back to the topic of trust for IP professionals.

Trust can be explained in simple terms through "The Trust Equation" (although, in reality, it is more nuanced)

Trust is a ratio where Credibility, Reliability, and Intimacy are amplified or diminished by Self-Orientation.

It's "Love Your Lawyer" day today.

I think for my network, I'll construe it as encompassing all legal professionals: including all you patent and trade mark attorneys that I know and "Love" 😉

My conversations with IP firms have some common themes on challenges:

Generational differences in expectations.

The learning curve for new systems and AI, pulling attorneys from core work.

Increased management burden with no support or training.

What are you seeing?

Senior leaders in legal, let's be honest: you have performance concerns. (Your own, a team member's, the firm's).

Coaching helps explore those concerns to work out a clear path to success.

Reach out if you want to overcome them.

It's Halloween, and I just found out that October was Squirrel Awareness month.

Can you blame me for searching "Halloween Squirrel"? And the internet obliged.

Feedback "Do's":

Balanced: Provide good & bad.

Timely: Give it promptly.

Specific & actionable: Focus on behaviour.

Empathetic: Use "I" statements, listen, & be professional.

Future-focused: Offer solutions, not just criticism.

Follow up: Check on progress.

Concluding my feedback series, here are my favourite models for giving feedback.

SBI Model (Situation, Behaviour, Impact)

CEDAR Model (Context, Examples, Diagnosis, Action, Review)

GROW Model (Goal, Reality, Options, Will)

How are you supporting your associates on their development track to partner? Are you teaching them leadership skills and then giving them a safe space to practice? If not, I can help you prepare the next generation of leaders.

Giving feedback is about striking the right balance, Goldilocks style. Too much or too little isn't effective. Done well, it improves work quality and speed, and builds trust.

This results in happier clients and a more profitable firm.

Porridge for thought.

Over-correcting written work is a hazard of training and supervision in the legal profession.

Before you next provide feedback, ask yourself: Is the work technically and legally correct? Is it detrimental to the client? Or is it simply someone developing their own style?

Here's a few more kind words from people I've worked with.

It makes me incredibly proud that how I want to show up is how others experience me in my work (check out the third of these testimonials) ☺️

Giving feedback can be hard. We avoid it to save ourselves discomfort and to avoid upsetting others. Not tackling the problem leads to frustration and can escalate to formal measures. Early feedback, though difficult, allows people to improve.

It can feel a long way to go from senior associate to partner. It feels complicated and you're not sure what will make a real difference.

A coach can help you develop the self-awareness, skills, and confidence to get there.

Telling someone they are incompetent for getting a task wrong creates a divide. They will not learn in this heightened emotional state.

Instead of blaming the individual, direct the feedback at the behaviour or action. The draft was bad, not the attorney.

Podcast editing again for the IP Inclusive 10th anniversary series.

I rather like listening back. I hear & learn new things on the second go (perhaps more so than first time).

Please do give the series a listen - episodes are being released every Monday.

Once, I gave feedback to someone who was struggling. I got frustrated and, to my embarrassment, my tone of voice showed it.

Letting out your frustration doesn't make anything better. I should have stayed calm.

A valuable lesson.

When I was on the partner track, I felt pressure to be perfect and to do everything. Looking back, I now see that it was unnecessary. A coach could have helped me see this by challenging my self-perception and encouraging personal development.

If you're named in legal rankings, Congratulations! It's a great achievement. But it's not just an ego boost.

Take time to reflect. What actions led to this? What can you learn from them for the benefit of your clients? How can you champion others who aren't yet visible?
October 14, 2025 at 7:55 AM
We often avoid giving feedback to be "nice".

We might minimise the error to avoid upset. But being nice in this way isn't helpful. It stops learning from the mistakes. You can be kind and still provide useful, difficult feedback.

It's World Mental Health Day.

I've learned that mental health is something I have to think about.

Regular therapy has taught me this is ok and helped me be happier.

I can't recommend enough giving your mind some care and attention.

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day.

I'm posting this as a reminder that while that day is tomorrow, we all still have mental health today, and again in two days.

Please be aware of your mental health and that of others every day, not just on 10 October.
