"Why do you keep invitin' me to stay with you?" Taken aback by the abrupt question, Soap opened his mouth to spout off a joke. He snapped it closed again when he caught a glimpse of the haunted expression hidden beneath Ghost's stoicism. It was like a siren song, that honest expression, luring him into spilling his own truths. After all, hadn't he promised himself he'd finally tell Ghost how he felt? "Because I like having ye here," Soap said with a half shrug, as it he hadn't just bared his soul. "You like havin' a pathetic lump hangin' around over the holidays?" "It's..." Soap swallowed and let his eyes drop to where his fingers played with the edge of the blanket in the foot of space between them. The urge to make a joke—to dispel the tension—bubbled up his throat again, but he swallowed it down. He gritted his teeth and forced himself to look into Ghost's searching eyes, a mix of belligerence and determination tightening his muscles as he admitted, "Maybe I do. Maybe I like havin' ye around all the time, no matter what kind of mood yer in, and I'll do whatever it takes tae keep ye nearby. Maybe I just... like us being together." Maybe I just like you.

I've decided I really like having Soap kiss Ghost's hand. Enough that I'm doing it two fics in a row. 😆 There's something about the action that just hits right for me—especially pre-relationship—by bringing out Soap's daring playfulness and Ghost's deeply hidden yearning for honest affection. #ghoap
Soap smiled and darted in to press a kiss to the back of Ghost's hand before letting go and rolling off the opposite side of the bed, careful to keep his torso straight to protect his ribs. "All the better. Now I get to tease Esther about failing in her mission to meet you." "Johnny..." Soap took a deep breath and turned back toward the bed, his lips on fire from that stupid, simple kiss. Ghost was blinking, his other hand wrapped tightly around the hand Soap had just kissed. He clenched his jaw and looked down before shaking his head. "Have a good time with your family."

Got my first spam comment on a fic today, and this one was from a registered "user." Luckily it was a commission one instead of a mean one, but it makes me hate scammers even more for trying to ruin a space that is built on valuing people who labor for free because they love something. 😟😞

"J'nny?" "Yeah, Ghost, I'm here." "Fuck'rs sho' me, J'nny." Soap huffed out a half-panicked laugh as he turned Ghost over. The hazy look in his normally sharp eyes sent another surge of adrenaline through Soap as he hastily pulled off Ghost's vest and ripped his shirt open to find the wound. He bit his lip hard to hold back the gasp when the messy hole in his side came into view. "I can see tha'. Gonna stay awake for me while I treat this?" "Yeah. Do anythin' f'r you, J'nny." The words sent Soap's heart racing even as a lump formed in his throat when Ghost didn't even flinch as Soap packed the wound with as much hemostatic gauze as he could find between the two of them and then pressed down. The sounds of gunfire had tapered off, but Soap didn't dare lift the pressure to go check the door. In his ear, Gaz and Price murmured back and forth as they cleared the building. Seven minutes to evac.

I'm gonna put my stuff away and then take a—" Soap cut off the rest of his sentence with a click of his teeth as the door swung open. In the room that once held two very serviceable twin beds now stood a single, king-sized bed. Soap wiped a hand down his face and turned back to the living room... that he noticed had only a love seat instead of full-sized couch. "Hells bells," he mumbled into the hand still covering his mouth. "I think I've been sabotaged."

*Readers* are at this point complaining if a writer tells them anything. Avoiding ever just saying, "It was freezing" and instead always doing an entire song and dance to explain how the character feels in the cold leads to purple prose, and I'm not sorry to say it.
