I was hoping I could catch a glimpse of the photons before they got excited to see me, but they start dancing too quickly. So, I'm a little sad about that.” Frame 2: Ooookay...” Dwyn says, guiding Star Boy over to the couch and TV. “I think you've been spending too much time alone. I could probably use a night off from inventing, anyway. Come and watch while I play Draconic Era.” Frame 3: “...” Star Boy says, watching Dwyn play a game. “Is that dwarf named...?” “Yes,” Dwyn says. “I don't want to talk about it.” Frame 4: “So, Dwyn...” Star Boy says. “Yes, Sparkles?” “Remember when I suggested that maybe wearing a disguise would let me go out and be around people?” Frame 5: Dwyn sighs, saying, “I already told you it wouldn't work.” “But I-” Star Boy begins, while Dwyn continues over him, “I know you want to go out, see the world, and meet people, but you need to be sensible about this.” Frame 6: “I already-” Star boy tries, but Dwyn cuts him off, saying, “Firstly, you're a star. Frame 1: A crowd of people point guns as Star Boy, who faces them with his sword sheathed on his back. “Heh,” one of the people says. “Looks like someone brought a knife to a gunfight.” Another asks, “Why would you use a sword in a world that has guns?” Frame 2: Star Boy puts on his lecturing face and says, “Guns can jam or run out of ammo. A well-maintained sword is always reliable. Besides, anyone can use a gun. Pull a trigger, someone dies – maybe by accident. A sword takes skill. A sword requires you to have the honour to give your opponent a chance to fight back. A sword isn't just a killing machine, it lets you get up close and personal.” Frame 3: All but three people in the crowd have vanished, though only one has noticed. “I use a sword because I don't need a gun,” Star Boy continues. “You don't need a gun when all your intelligent opponents take one look at your sword and run. As for the rest...” Frame 4: “Heads will roll,” Star boy says as, in one smooth movement, he unsheathes his sword and whirls around, removing the heads of everyone who failed to run. “How are those guns working out for you?”

Maybe she won't notice it's missing.” Frame 3: Star boy stands by the bed, holding a blanket and saying, “Dwyn was right. I am never leaving this basement again.” Frame 4: That evening... Dwyn's eyes can be seen in a completely dark frame. “I'm home! Sparkles...? I didn't see him outside... Sparkles, where are you!?” Frame 5: “I'm right here,” Star Boy says, peeking out from under a blanket and shedding light everywhere. Frame 6: “What are you doing under there?” Dwyn asks. “Ok, I'm just, uh...” Star Boy says, “Playing with the photons.” Frame 7: “... Playing with photons?” Dwyn asks, confusion written on her face. “Yeah!” Star Boy says with a brittle grin. “Here, I'll show you!” Frame 8: The frame goes dark with a swish. Frame 9: Light fills the frame with another swish as Star Boy peeks out from under the blanket again with an unhinged smile, saying, “Dance, little photons! Dance!”

However, if you take something inexplicable and make it even odder, they get so confused that they don't know how to react. Star Boy is standing by Dwyn, who is attaching diodes connecting him to a laptop on a table. Beside the laptop is a strange machine with antennae, a screen, dials, switches, and a wire connecting it to a cuff. “It's done! Time for testing” Dwyn says. “What is it?” Star Boy asks. “First I need to get some new readings to compare to the old ones...” Dwyn says before answering, “In theory, it's something like a battery.” Frame 2: “It should allow be to collect and store some of your star energy so I can experiment with it,” Dwyn says as she works on the laptop. “Hmm... It looks like your readings are the same as before. That means you haven't built up more energy than you had the day we met. So we can rule out you storing up enough energy to escape Earth's gravitational field on your own.” Frame 3: “We'll just slip this on you, then I flip this switch...” Dwyn says, slipping the cuff over one of Star Boy's limbs and reaching for the machine. Frame 4: In a series of frames, the screen on the machine begins to rapidly fill up with yellow as Dwyn's smile becomes more concerned and surprised. BOOM! Frame 5: Star Boy and Dwyn stare blankly into space while the cuff on Star Boy's limb is attached to a shattered machine. Dwyn walks past with a stack of books titled Creativity, Science, and Physics. “If humans send things to space all the time, why can't I get back that way?” Star Boy asks. Dwyn replies, “Because it's too expensive for us normal people. Besides, we'd have to tell them you exist. If we did that, people in black suits and dark sunglasses would show up to take you away. You'd probably be locked up in some secret underground laboratory to be experimented on. Frame 2: Time break. Star Boy is peeking over the back of the couch to talk to Dwyn, who is hammering on an anvil, while a show called Paranormal (definitely not Supernatural) is on the TV behind him. “What does it mean when I can barely see anything on the screen?” Star Boy asks. “That's darkness, when no light is around,” Dwyn explains. “Darkness!?” Star Boy says. “Wow! I've never seen darkness before!” “... I wonder why that could be...” Dwyn mutters. Frame 3: Time break. Star Boy and Dwyn are playing a video game together. “Why are you away most of the day?” Star Boy asks. “I have to work so I have money to pay for the things I need to live,” Dwyn explains. “I'm a laboratory assistant. Still. I keep getting passed over for promotion. They say it's because I need more experience, but I'm pretty sure it's because I keep disproving my boss's theories.” “This capitalism system of yours is very flawed,” Star Boy comments. Frame 1: Two stick figures are conversing. “Have you ever considered donating or subscribing to the Star Boy comics?” “Why would I pay money for something that's free?” Star Boy, having overheard this conversation, chimes in, “No. Absolutely not.” Frame 2: “Well, you see,” says the first person, “simple as the comics are, it still takes the artist 4-8 hours to make each one, and that's not including time spent planning and plotting. Right now, the artist is a stay-at-home parent, so that time is available, but when the kids go to school it will be time to seek paying work. That wouldn't leave time for making comics.” Star Boy chimes in again, saying, “Yes! Exactly! Let them D*e.” Frame 3: “However,” the person continues, “if the artist makes enough money from these comics, there will be no need for a job to help the family make ends meet. That would mean these comics could continue to be produced as long as ideas for more exist. Better yet, if you looked into the history of the Star Boy comics, you'll know that they essentially started as the artist trolling a friend. So, by giving the artist money, you're helping to make trolling a friend a full-time job for someone.” Star Boy, looking slightly distressed, says, “Please no. Please make it stop.” Frame 4: The figures are now grinning at each other as the second one says, “... Shut up and take my money.” Star Boy stares at the reader in horrified despair, saying, “Why!?
