The opening of this film has to be amongst the greatest of all time. And it never really falls off after that either. Superbly cast with an effortless blend of comedy, drama, and action. It’s almost perfect.

As an English speaker, I have to wonder how much of this mostly works for me because it’s in French. The sing-song dialogue looks so mundane in the subtitles, but it also sounds so whimsical and romantic to the ear.

I can’t get over how clumsy the love-making looks in some of these older films. Is he kissing her? Or is his facing tripping over her neck? I cannot tell.

Anyway, it is an interesting and tragic exploration of fidelity and gender roles.
