Situated 111 metres above sea level, São João Batista Fort, also known as 'Pico Fort', is considered one of the landmarks of the Island of Madeira. As the sun rises it casts a yellow glow throughout the cloudy sky, the first rays illuminate the fortress at its elevated position, casting a warm light on its stone ramparts and walls. The atmosphere is tranquil. Houses with terracotta rooftops nestled in the mountainside can be seen beside the fortress, and beyond the fortress the houses are shrouded in mist.
