My big project over the last 14 months (!) has been building a shed from scratch. It’s been incredibly satisfying to make a little building from nothing. It’s not done, but it’s rigged for lighting now, and the glow is so cozy that I couldn’t keep it all for myself. Happy Friday.

Heatwaves can be dry, or wet, or dry-then-wet, or wet-then-dry, or wet-then-dry-then-wet, or...

It all depends where you are and what season it is! Our new paper dives into the cool world of heatwaves and precipitation.

Going to miss the fantastic textiles and tilework and dishware in Andor. What a show.

Another form of catnip for a certain kind of systematizing brain: writing business requirements for a technology solution.

"Here are 700 imperative, all-encompassing sentences articulating my specific mental model for how the world should work, each categorized and nested and linked"
The need to write design principles* has strong “underperforming former gifted kid” energy

(* a bunch of rules that are your idiosyncratic attempt to steer a messy thing in a conclusive way (and which make you mad when all your peers don’t follow them))

Let’s try ‘working in public’ again, here’s what’s on deck:
- kick off new project (going deep on an arcane discipline’s ways of working/processes, to draft req’ts for the software chassis it sits upon)
- build out journey, IA, req’ts, and WFs for a small digital thing

Ok, on deck for today:
- Review a pseudo-proposal — really more of a menu
- Rebuild a project plan for a requirements definition project for enterprise health software
- Draft a quick and dirty qual research plan and recruit spec
- Schedule a handful of workshops and meetings over the coming weeks

Here’s a lovely little ode to e-bikes from @robinrendle.bsky.social Maybe 2025 is the year for me to get one, and perhaps you too. They are, after all, marvellously *democratic*.

In news unrelated to the other thing going on: my dog continues to be extremely good.

Made a little tool caddy today.

It was not a hard puzzle: no complex stakeholdering, no fundamentally misaligned incentives.

Instead, it was about imperfect material and the still-learning movements of the tools.

In the span of about four hours, a need was resolved, simply and without frills.
