Knitting over 100 years of temperature data from Kentville, Nova Scotia, Canada.
I don't think the needle wire is supposed to snap mid-row... 😅

Life sure keeps things interesting!

I'm currently knitting over 100 years of temperature data from Kentville, Nova Scotia. I learned to knit 2 weeks before I had this ambitious idea. It all started with a lunch and learn. A friend had questions about climate change, and she was willing to teach me how to knit. Win-win. #howigotstarted

Environment and Climate Change Canada says 2026 will likely be one of the hottest years ever recorded. They say there's more than a 99% chance it will be hotter than every year before 2023. Will this news lead to stronger climate policy in Canada? #climatedata #canada

I see this comment a lot:
“Why worry about Canada when China and India emit more?”

Let’s unpack that.

China emits the most greenhouse gases in total because it has a very large population. India’s emissions are rising for the same reason.

But totals don’t tell the whole story.

Knitting over 100 years of temperature data has been an oddly cathartic activity for me. It started as what I would call "rage knitting" where I would think about all the climate denial I'd come across.

Over the weekend, I completed the 1980s #temperatureblanket. This blanket represents average temperature data from Kentville, Nova Scotia.

To complete this, it required approximately 50 skeins of yarn and ~400 hours of labour. This is only part of Kentville's climate story.

This is my favourite tree. It's a century old red oak. Nothing cures a bad day like a short hike with my dog to hug this magnificent tree.

Last week I finished the 2025 temperature blanket section. After the last stitch, I took a photo and I noticed something: it looked more wintery than the 2023 section (the first one I completed). That led me to compare 2024 as well, which also had more snow.

With the winter weather in Nova Scotia, I’ve been thinking about blizzards in the context of climate discourse. They’re memorable, disruptive, and easy to talk about. (We love chatting with neighbours about the weather, after all!)

Happy New Year! While it may be the first day of 2026, this morning, I completed 2025's temperature blanket section!

The average temperature was 8.0⁰C in Kentville, Nova Scotia.

It's no secret that Nova Scotia (and other parts of Canada) have experienced drought conditions this summer. But these three photos showed just how bad it's been. It was a heartbreaking sight to see my local marsh so dry that it's void of water and cracking. #drought #novascotia #climatechange

This week, our planet hit the highest CO2 levels ever directly recorded: 430 parts per million.

It’s a stark reminder of the urgent need for action to reduce emissions and build a cleaner economy ⬇️

When I first started out, I often called it “rage knitting” because it allowed me to work through the frustration of climate denial. Nowadays, this project helps me feel grounded and focused on the positive. Slow, steady, and meaningful. #knittherapy #climatedenial #artivism

Today is #worldbiodiversityday 🌎

Biodiversity is what keeps our planet thriving—from the tiniest fungi to massive forests. Climate change, pollution & habitat loss are putting it all at risk. Protecting nature means protecting ourselves.

The first blanket I knit was for 2023. I can point to the polar vortex and leap year! That blew my mind - seeing data I lived through, captured in yarn. #knitthestory #artivism

Knitting daily temperatures started as a personal project. Now it’s how I see climate change. It’s not just warmer days - it’s colours, shifts, and stories in every stitch. #knitdata #climatechange #artivism

Did you know allergy season is getting longer in Canada?

Climate change means warmer temps, longer plant growing seasons, and way more pollen. This means more sneezing and itchy eyes - even for folks who never had allergies before.

This project reminds me: big change takes time. Just like climate action, knitting a data blanket is all about showing up daily - even when it’s slow. #consistencycounts #artivism
