A slice of city life… nowadays its mainly about birds.

The last time I saw Flaco was when he returned to his tree after visiting the Lower Eastside. Nov 17, 2023.
That summer, when birdwatching got boring I would visit Flaco. He kept me interested in my new hobby. Miss you.

Forgive the graininess of this video. We located this American Woodcock from a distance and we took care not to get close and have it fly away.

Here is a juvenile American Oystercatcher finding its way south during fall migration. The eyes are still dark and the adults have slightly longer necks.

A birder recently told me one way to ID Royal Terns. “Look for the male patterned baldness on the head”. Yep that’s in my head FOREVER.

A female Greater Scaup is brown with a darker head and white patches by the bill. They can dive up to 20 feet in search of food.

Buffleheads are small diving ducks. Their name comes from the male’s “Buffalo like” puffy large head.

At this time of year Bumble (Prospect Park’s the leucistic squirrel) is usually holding some treasured food item and is sprinting off to bury it.

Found a group of Tufted Titmouses, they gave themselves away by being chatty! The Chickadees won’t be far behind.

I learn so much on Ryan’s bird walks. If you like my posts I’m sure you’ll enjoy his new book, Bird City.

The moon glistens as the sun sets at 4:50pm.
Green-wood closes at 6pm.
So its quiet and darkness seeps in.

Saw two bats, a Great Blue Heron hunting for fish and a Red-tailed Hawk, well, just hunting.

I’m getting better at spotting birds from a distance. Good thing I captured this Cooper’s Hawk, once I got closer it flew off.

Another lost tourist! At this time of year Horned Grebes are white and gray with a black cap and contrasting white cheek. Wasn't close enough to capture the red eyes.

We have a guest from the West Coast, a stunning Varied Thrush. Bright orange with a black face mask. Bounced around all afternoon, eating to get enough strength for its return trip home.

Winter Wrens are so cute but they can be hard to find. I always describe them as little brown golf balls.

We usually don't find Rusty Blackbirds atop a Pine tree. They must be going after the insects that are around the pine cones.

Found a Great Blue Heron on top of a small tree. It was sleeping but then woke up and started preening. A feather floated to the ground and I got it!

When I got to this spot there were only three birds. Lucky for me one of them was a Nelson’s Sparrow. I was the only birder there and I got quite a show from this little bird.

Look at this Palm Warbler bobbing its tail. The tail movement stirs up insects which is the bird’s preferred food source.

A murder of Crows did not like us. Cackling and flying the whole time, it felt like a scene from “The Birds”. They actually cracked a branch and it fell behind our group. (Sound up to hear it). One of the birders took the branch as a souvenir.
