@baynature.org’s latest issue highlights 4 restoration sites around the Bay Area including our Sears Point property! For over 120 years, dikes held back the tides for farmland and ranches. Since the levee was broken in 2015, nature has reclaimed the land, once again making it a tidal marsh.

The Sonoma Creek Baylands could become one of the largest restored wetlands on the West Coast. This former patchwork of diked farmland is poised to return to a thriving, climate-resilient tidal marsh with trails, overlooks, and restored habitat.

How do our local jackrabbits survive cold winters if they don't hibernate? This Black-tailed Jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) seeks shelter in brush or snowdrifts, grows a thicker coat, and shifts its diet to hardy bark and twigs.

Where do butterflies and other insects go when it gets cold? Many will migrate, hibernate, or enter a state of suspended development called diapause. Volunteer John Hibbard visited Laufenburg Ranch at the end of Nov. for probably the last time until spring, but was still able to find a few insects.
