An ongoing discussion about a new study on predictors of elite performance revolves around the concept of collider bias.

Colliders are like confounds, except predictor and outcome influence the collider instead of the reverse.

It's funny how people will accept that you have a glandular system that isn't functioning like it should (e.g., diabetes) UNLESS it's breastfeeding in which case you must not love your baby

I just did a study on this topic, asking people with underrepresented identities to recall the first time they saw those identities represented onscreen. Lots of "don't laugh" moments like yours.

Hakeem Jefferson does great measurement work. I assigned 2 of his papers for my survey research seminar. One presents a new scale of respectability politics (relevant to his post below). I strongly recommend his work for showing students how to reason through the development and testing of measures
I think a lot abt how marginalized people are expected to be perfect just to be treated w/ basic dignity, just to access legal protection. But democracy can’t mean rights for the respectable few. It has to mean fair and just treatment even for those seen as least deserving. That’s the real test.

Forced sterilization of disabled people isn't a relic of the past
In most states, eugenics laws still let doctors sterilize disabled patients—even against their will.
