I've been thinking a lot about AI and how to categorizes AI to fully demonstrate the range of AI applications in use today for non-technical audiences. Gen AI have currently capture much of the public imagination and conversations around AI, but AI is so much more. I'd love feedback and suggestions.
Human-Centric AI: Understanding Technology’s Impact on Society
As a digital anthropologist, studying all digital technology from a human-centric approach allows me to focus on how the technology impacts the humans who use it and human culture more broadly. As I was recently preparing for an invited lecture on AI & Society, I realized that the existing schemes for categorizing AI focused on categorizing the technology, its level of intelligence, and the underlying learning (machine learning, deep learning, nerual networks) and data-gathering mechanisms (sensors, computer vision, etc).

Which came first: language or symbolic thinking? I always loved teaching four-field intro to
#anthropology because it gave me an opportunity to explore the latest findings in paleo-anthropology. #staycurious
A new genomic study suggests humans had language at least 135,000 years ago—long before symbolic artifacts appear in the archaeological record. Did language shape our evolution? #HumanOrigins #Evolution #LanguageScience #Anthropology #Linguistics #Genetics #LinguisticAnthropology

I wish there was an easy way to explain to @duolingoverde.bsky.social that it's been a difficult 45 days, but I'll be back as soon as I'm able.

This is a well documented systemic problem. I'd recommend reading Reproductive Injustice if you want to understand the consequences of this for mothers and babies as well as have a detailed account for the historic origins.

Unfortunately, it's much rarer to find wood left behind when we are talking about hundreds of thousands of years ago. The paleolithic started 3.3 million years, which is a very long time for wood to survive. So we have more stone tools and art.
Ogg make beautiful pine tables, Ogg make beautiful mahogany chairs, Ogg make incredible homes of wood and fur, do people say Ogg great wood age builder? No. Ogg make ONE stone axe...
Was the Stone Age Actually the Wood Age?

Ozark, Arkansas, a town of approximately 3,500 people, is expecting as many as 1.5 million people to join them for the solar eclipse on Monday. What does an influx like this do to a local environment?
