What if high school jock Kibum met theater kid Minho in a town where neither of them actually lived?
Kibum could not believe their waterskiing coach has decided they need “fun winter team bonding.” Was it not enough bonding to attend off-season gym hours? They all bonded quite well through mutual suffering. Indoors! Where it was warm! They did a summer sport on purpose! He glared distrustfully at the small ice rink he’d looked up in the nearest city he could justify taking a train to. As a rule, he didn’t do things in front of others unless he was already good at them, or knew he could get that way faster than anyone else. Since he couldn’t get out of this required ice skating outing, that left him no choice but to practice on his own ahead of time. Somewhere no one could see. “It’s just frozen water,” he muttered to himself and stepped resolutely onto the ice. His foot immediately skidded out from under him. He clutched the wall, face flaming. He was in the middle of convincing himself no other human beings existed in the world so he could get back to trying to figure out the mechanics of skating when a gloved hand appeared before him. He looked up and found it attached to an earnestly, annoyingly handsome guy his age. “Your first time skating?” he asked kindly. Kibum hated him a little. “Can I help?” Kibum narrowed his eyes, still clutching the wall. “I don’t know, can you?” The guy grinned at him. “I can try! Come on, take my hands. You’ll never learn how to move your feet if you hug the wall the whole time.” And then he stood there, perfectly balanced, not skidding or sliding around, holding out his hands patiently. Showing off. Like an asshole. Still glaring, Kibum took his hands. The guy didn’t immediately let go, and Kibum didn’t immediately fall down, so it was all going better than expected so far. “Great! I’m going to let go of one hand now just so I can stand next to you to show you what do do with your feet, but don’t worry, I won’t let you fall!” Kibum gripped the one hand left to him extra hard, but the guy didn’t even flinch. “Push off with one foot like this… I’m Choi Minho, by the way.” “Kim Kibum,” Kibum muttered, concentrating fiercely on making his feet do what Minho’s were. Part of him wished he’d made up a fake name, but whatever. It wasn’t like they’d ever see each other again. “You’re doing great!” Minho said, coming around to the front to take both of Kibum’s hands again, which meant he was skating backwards. Kibum felt his cheeks turn red again and told himself it was just the cold.

Okay, look, I started a new one instead, but it kept writing itself in my mind while I was trying to fall asleep, so I had no choice. Anyway. Wizard Yeosang.
It was not unheard of for Yeosang’s mind to wander in the middle of a spell, leading to mixed and often unexpected results. It had never once happened when conjuring himself food, though. He could work that spell half-asleep after multiple all-nighters in a row. Had done, in fact! Several times! Staring now at the man lying full-length down the middle of his table, he was forced to admit something had definitely gone awry. Yes, he’d started the spell thinking of a real meal full of protein and whatnot and then gotten distracted by cake halfway through, but that was nothing new. And admittedly there was cake on the table. Multiple cakes. But also: a man. “Hello?” he tried, hoping against hope that he’d maybe accidentally added some sort of very realistic illusion for some reason. (He’d never seen this man before in his life, though; he was fairly certain he’d remember.) The man gave a kind of wheezing inhale, like he’d had the breath knocked out of him when he landed. Which he probably had. Yeosang winced. There were a lot of books on that part of the table. It couldn’t have been a comfortable impact.

Every time Yunho hosts an ANEWZ update, I am very sad there are two other fics that need to be finished/posted before I can get to this one
The funny thing (or at least Mingi thought it was funny) was how much of a literal textbook case of parasocial relationship formation this was. He’d once proofread an academic paper for an ex about the effect of parasocial interaction on social influencer marketing strategies, because he might not have gone to grad school himself but he was good with words, and while the main thing he got from the end of all that was a firm decision to finally change his main hangout cafe to the arts district instead of his old one by the university and a lingering distrust of Instagram (which was deeply inconvenient since he needed to use it for work, thank you very much), random facts from the paper stuck with him. Especially the bit about how parasocial interaction measures were originally invented to examine people’s one-way relationships with their local newscasters and weathermen (and soap opera characters doing product placement, of course). The point was there was real documented evidence that more parasocially loved newscasters were taken more seriously in emergency situations. Yunho’s existence was clearly a valuable public service. “...And this has been Jeong Yunho. Have a great day!” the TV said, reinforcing his point in the mental argument he was having with no one. “You too, Yunho-ssi,” he said back, the way he did every morning now. Several days later, Mingi found himself stuck in a nocturnal phase, thanks to the hurry up and wait pattern he was in with some collaborators in Europe and also the West Coast of the US, and if he didn’t spend a few hours around actual, physical people, he could tell he was going to get a little bit… weird, so he took himself and his laptop to the coffee shop. Might as well work on a personal project while all his other ones were in other people’s hands right now. That would have been a more valid plan if he hadn’t been adding and removing the same layer to one mix for half an hour. He moved one of his headphones off his ear to let more ambient noise in and took a large mouthful of his caramel macchiato, wondering if he could get the barista to add more syrup next time without getting into the territory of truly judgmental looks. “Have a great day,” he heard from the direction of the register. “You too, Yunho-ssi,” he answered absently, fiddling with the bass level this time with no real hope it would fix whatever the track was missing. A shadow fell over his keyboard. With a sudden feeling of dread, he looked up, and then up a little more, into the amused face of Jeong Yunho. In the actual flesh, not on his TV screen. “I am so sorry,” Mingi managed somehow, face blazing. “You just… you say it every morning, and…” he trailed off weakly. This was it, definitive proof there was not in fact a benevolent and loving god, because if the universe cared about him at all, he’d have been struck dead on the spot.

I DEVOURED A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine and loved it so much I immediately bought the second book in the duology. It’s a political thriller in a sci-fi setting but also a murder mystery but also a critique of empire and it somehow blends all of those together beautifully
