Conversations that started with a handful of people quickly grew into dozens-sometimes 40 to 50 people-wanting to listen, share their stories, and offer a hug. For many, it was their first hug with a Muslim Some recurring points from our conversations: - We are both minorities. Many politicians feed fear for political gain, but we are the ones who pay the price. Islamophobia and antisemitism are rising, hurting both our communities. - These acts have nothing to do with Islam. Yet when a perpetrator is Muslim, it instantly becomes about Islam and terrorism. - When incidents like Bondi Junction or Bourke Street happen, religion isn't mentioned, it's framed as mental health. - When we talk about the Holocaust, we say it was done by fascists or Nazis, not Christians. If the tyrant who committed the holocaust had been Muslim, the narrative would look very different today. - As an elected councillor and community leader, I invited them to Auburn to come wearing their symbols, visit the mosque, and walk the area with me. I'm equally committed to bringing Muslims to Bondi. Let's break the ice both ways.
