First position paper I ever wrote. "Beyond Statistical Learning: Exact Learning Is Essential for General Intelligence" arxiv.org/abs/2506.23908 Background: I'd like LLMs to help me do math, but statistical learning seems inadequate to make this happen. What do you all think?
Beyond Statistical Learning: Exact Learning Is Essential for General Intelligence
Sound deductive reasoning -- the ability to derive new knowledge from existing facts and rules -- is an indisputably desirable aspect of general intelligence. Despite the major advances of AI systems ...

New paper: Simulating Time With Square-Root Space

people.csail.mit.edu/rrw/time-vs-...

It's still hard for me to believe it myself, but I seem to have shown that TIME[t] is contained in SPACE[sqrt{t log t}].

To appear in STOC. Comments are very welcome!

Excited to announce the first RLC 2025 keynote speaker, a researcher who needs little introduction, whose textbook we've all read, and who keeps pushing the frontier on RL with human-level sample efficiency

Wow, o1 seems to have the biggest ego of any LLM I ever tested before. It gives me incorrect solutions to simple math problems and then insists on that I misunderstand things. And it cannot be swayed! Wow, just wow.

This one is for @conitzer.bsky.social whom I spotted here. Although I'm done done reading it, I'm feeling very good about this book, which avoids so many of the traps of this complicated but important subject and presents things simply, but strongly. Thanks Vincent!!
