To springboard off this, I think a much better piece of advice is "make sure everything in your story has a purpose" because not everything needs to further the plot, but every element should be doing *something*.
I am not a fan of "remove anything that doesn't further the plot" because sometimes you just need to have the characters take a break to have dinner and talk
it might not be directly "furthering the plot" but it *is* enriching the characters
