MY SON attended a science exhibition somewhere in the United States last month and randomly came across a newspaper clipping from a newspaper called 'The Crowley Post-Signal' dated October 7, 1901. What struck us all in the face was the article in there, on page 2, titled 'CIVILIZATION IN UGANDA'. Even though we understand that this was 120 years ago when Africa was still referred to as 'The Dark Continent', the anger that builds up in your mind as you read the entry can tilt you over in your seat.

We do not really deserve cities because we do not fully understand what they are. Some of the highly educated and even well-employed people who have been discussing these floods, for instance, do not have garbage disposal systems within their homesteads.

By Simon Kaheru on April 25, 2013 WE had a concept at the school I went to, that described the careless use of pit latrines. Some people were new to pit latrines, having come from the city where toilet facilities involved sitting rather than squatting. Others simply mis-aimed their efforts, leaving their smelly evidence on the floor. NOT the real one but...

it was africans who discovered the source of the nile

The majority of strong Africans are very, very young with long lives ahead of them; sadly they don't know who they are, or what they can do. We need to tell them - make them realise their strength with the pride of our forefathers.

THE HEADLINE alone intrigued and delighted me: "Dubai Sex Trafficker Is Not Ugandan". This was fantastic - seeing a media house disassociating Uganda so glaringly from the main guilt factor in the story; giving ordinary Ugandans some breathing space. See, shortly after the original news story broke, there was a kerfuffle as some headlines claimed that the United Arab Emirates had started restricting visa issuance to Ugandans BECAUSE OF the Dubai sex trafficking story.

we can’t just say ‘yes, minister’ fwaaa about kampala issues

THE recent census of Uganda (2024) told us that about 73% of Ugandans are aged below 30. That means about 34million Ugandans out there might never have watched 'Yes, Minister or 'Yes, Prime Minister', from the 1980s. In that epic comedy,…

THE recent census of Uganda (2024) told us that about 73% of Ugandans are aged below 30. That means about 34million Ugandans out there might never have watched 'Yes, Minister or 'Yes, Prime Minister', from the 1980s. In that epic comedy, Minister Jim Hacker often received guidance from his Permanent Secretary, Sir Humphrey Appleby, about how to say nothing in an important manner designed to keep them all politically safe.

Everything about this Africa of ours needs to be fixed urgently; and it can only be fixed by Africans - all of us: Me and then You.

learn how to use a calendar, people!

There are parts of the government that know if they do not follow the calendar diligently we can face a national crisis. That's why so much care is paid to all the key dates around Constitutional processes.

WHILE FOLLOWING President Museveni's various economic tours in rural Uganda over the years, I have often asked myself why I don't have a four-acre model project to showcase. More importantly, my bank managers and creditors have not asked me this question either. I don't need to go into the details of the four acres and what they can possibly hold - that's been told to us for decades now.

ONE OF the funniest cartoons out there from our continent is Kenya's "FatBoyKenya Kapinto, where he goes: "My level is here...up here" and raises his hands to indicate where: "Level yangu hiko hapa juu!" Then he goes, "Yako hiko (Yours is) Chini! Kwa Mchanga! (Down! In the dust!). () The United States' President Trump mimicked Kapinto this week, talking about his Trade Tariffs being about Tanks instead of Tshirts and Takkies this week - that's six t's in a row, with 'takkies' being squeezed in as the appropriately South African replacement for sneakers (what Trump said).
