This is *exactly* why Digitalis (foxglove) is so invasive. The tall plants produce an unbelievable number of tiny seeds that very easy to accidentally scatter around, and they’re famously poisonous so none of our native animals are adapted to eat it. Instead, once it has escaped . . .

"To recover the islands’ Julia Orangetips, could we simply plant more of their preferred host plant? Tower Mustard is native to the San Juan Islands, easy to grow and a part of meadow restoration projects being carried out elsewhere."

Honey bees are domesticated animals introduced from Europe — and aren't endangered, unlike many of North America's over 3600 species of native bees. Honey bees crowd out native bees from food & spread diseases to them. Instead of adding another hive, plant native flowers!

Want to Save the Bees? Focus on Habitat, Not Honey Bees
Keeping honey bee hives will not help the 3,600 bee species native to North America. In fact, it might do the opposite. The best solution to bee declines is to address underlying causes like habitat l...

Grass Widows are blooming! I am also happy to report that the Grass Widow seed I sowed in the fall have germinated so expect this plant to be available in the future. The seed came from Northwest Meadowscapes but I hope to someday find a spot where I can sustainably harvest Grass Widow seed locally.

For every 5 butterflies seen 20 years ago, now there are only 4. While a few species have actually increased, many more have declined—some dramatically. Of 554 species, 107 declined by over 50%.
Even still, providing habitat & reducing pesticides can change things!

In the Salish Sea region, the distribution of this butterfly is very patchy, with significant populations found only on San Juan Island — mainly at Cattle Point — and the Victoria Capital Region on Vancouver Island. Cattle Point is crucial for the survival of this species in San Juan County
