On this day in 1570 the very first assassination by firearm took place. And it happened to be in Scotland!On 23rd January, 1570, James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray and Regent for the young King James VI, was assassinated in Linlithgow.The assassination was carried out by James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh (seen above), a fervent supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots.As the Regent’s cavalcade passed through the main street, Hamilton fired a single shot from an Italian matchlock hunting carbine from the window of his uncle’s house, killing Stewart.This event is significant because it’s considered the first time a firearm was used for a political assassination. The use of a firearm, especially one that could be concealed and fired from a distance, marked a new and alarming threat to the security of powerful individuals at the time.The Regent’s body was shipped to Leith then taken to Holyrood Abbey. Moray was buried on 14 February 1570 in St. Giles Kirk in Edinburgh.Following the murder, Hamilton fled to France, where he was offered further assassination work, but refused.
