Eclectic.
Back to baking bread after break caused by drop in demand (2 children at university and 3rd has been wearing braces til now). Kept starter alive in fridge and revived it in the last week

Here‘s the medal awarded to In Our Time. Posting this as a version of the holding-the-silver-trophy-over-head ritual. Was about to shake teapot and spray tea over everyone but had second thoughts

We are awarding our President's Medal to 'In Our Time' as it has done so much to showcase humanities & social sciences. We'd decided this before the news of Melvyn Bragg stepping down, but glad we got our timing right & had a chance to celebrate with him!

Glad to be a plus one at the announcement of the nominees for the first Ilse Schwepke prize for Women’s Travel Writing. Winner to be announced in Frankfurt on 17th October. Feeling: uxorious. Hoping: victorious.

One observation: in German media, a celebration of the culture of conversation in UK academia and what flows from that.

Melvyn Bragg: Ende der BBC-Sendung „In Our Time“
Melvyn Bragg hat 27 Jahre lang in der BBC die wahrscheinlich klügste Radiosendung der Welt gemacht. Jetzt hört er auf. Zum Ende einer Ära.

I see I’ve written ‘Wednesday’ as if that’s not yesterday 🙄. One of those weeks where so much happens that an hour seems like a day. Oh well.

I’m passing on any messages so thanks for emailing them or posting them here (or elsewhere)

So many tributes to Melvyn since Wednesday and I was especially moved by Esther Rantzen and her reference to Joni Mitchell and Big Yellow Taxi (Don't it always seem to go/ That you don't know what you got 'til it's gone?) but not for the obvious reason.

Slightly short of words today but happy to echo this from John who, with Teresa and Phil, slipped in under the wire for what turned out to be a fitting close. Great edition www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

On a ferry across the Baltic and saw this retro French ad for constipation remedies (underneath the children’s burgers) and something in it immediately reminded me of a very brief encounter with Jane Birkin many years ago

We no longer have the shorter repeats on Thursday evenings but a full repeat on Sunday. Can’t say I miss taking 14 minutes out of a 42 minute discussion and doing that to a tight deadline, though I did like the echo effect
If you missed our episode of In Our Time on civility (and can't wait for the rebroadcasts tonight and Sunday), you can catch the extended version on BBC Sounds here. I won't spoiler you on my tea or coffee order save to say that I was delighted it was the same as Melvyn's.
