Just because I became so fascinated by the Kafkaesque absurdity of the Cavalry Terms suggesting you print a hard copy of their terms, then check back regularly for unannounced updates, I decided to reach out to their contact listed in the terms asking about it. If I hear back, I’ll update here.

Reading more of the Terms & Conditions of apps will make your head spin. Not only do Cavalry recommend you print and retain a copy of the Terms for future reference, they also get to revise the terms at any point, without notice. So, you need to come back regularly and re-print the terms?

I like learning new tools, but tech’s increasing invasions-of-privacy have made me start reading the ToS more often before I download things. When you do that, you see some hilarious stuff. Do these companies actually think people will print and retain copies of these agreements? They’re absurd.

I’m a big fan of all the fonts on Indestructible Type, but their latest release and the accompanying page for it are so thoughtful and inspiring. Wonderful work! Marauder* from Indestructible Type*

Adding to the list of reasons I’m planning on leaving Substack: They are so US-centric. I’m Canadian, as is most of my audience, and yet their dashboard offers to show me stats for “USA” and “World”. Because to US companies, that’s what exists: the USA and… oh, yeah! Everyone else.

Happy Halloween! Usually I plan newsletters ahead of time and give myself the chance to sit and review them, but I just have too many thoughts about the Affinity/Canva news and what it means for artists.

“Ooo if we tax billionaires fairly, they’ll just leave!” Um. GOOD. You’re telling me if we forced Loblaws in Canada to pay their fair share we’d get rid of Galen Weston? How many small businesses do billionaires destroy? How do we all not want this?

Thinking a bit more about the new Affinity app, I think it’s illustrative of how hard corporations have squeezed us that so many people are reacting negatively to this being “free.” If Serif had done everything the same without being acquired by Canva, we’d probably all feel differently.

I don’t want to sound like a conspiracy theory nut, but I did tag all the founders of Substack in my latest newsletter, calling them out for platforming Nazis, and that post has received zero engagement through the Substack app. Just a curious observation. 🤔
October 8, 2025 at 1:33 PM
Substack insists they’re different from the other platforms. They say they’re a bastion for writers and artists in a world that devalues our work. And yet, even they ultimately just call it all “Content.” Slop to fill a void.

What does it mean to create things that destroy things? Is making a bomb as creative as drawing a picture?

Adobe Illustrator just crashed on me when I disabled one of their AI features in the preferences… This feels like some kind of cruel joke.

Look, I get that this is big, scary news, but it is wild to me that four of the top five articles on CBC right now are about an American being killed by another American in America. We say we’ll “never be the 51st state!” but sometimes we act like the U.S. is the only Country on earth…

The #enshittification of major software is super notable when you launch alternative apps compared to the dominant ones. Libre Office apps open in seconds, while Word and Excel take forever. Affinity, Inkscape, and Blender all open quickly while an Adobe app will hang and even crash on launch. 🙈

My “productivity hack” is to assume you just aren’t allowed to turn off most AI crap, and just stop using the products that shove it in your face.

If you can’t stop using them, then you invest the time to (hopefully) be able to turn them off (you probably can’t).

How is this an improvement?
So funny because AI is touted as such a "productivity booster" but it actually EATS into my time when I can't figure out how to turn it off lollll.
