I was supportive of this idea, until I started hearing what actual Canadians had to say about the whole idea, and about us and about how their views were justified. Having had the misfortune of dealing with white supremacists while growing up, I found what I was hearing extremely familiar.

The way that Canadians were talking about Americans was exactly the same way that Klansmen used to talk about my family. They didn't give a damn about the differences in viewpoint between this American or that American, or between the blue states or the red.

They hated us all, just for being American, just for existing and there was no getting through to them. They were determined to see us as the enemy and to repay us for our "evil" by being genuinely evil to us in return. They were an unreasoning enemy with whom no peace could be made.
